I Am My Own King, and Esquire is in My Cavalry
Nagpuli ko gina, with the little sweldo I finally got from the center inside my leather Hickok coin purse, nga gapanumdom of meeting Pam to finally give her the rest of the money nga I still owe her. Ginpa-andar ko ang electric fan, turned on my laptop, opened my Facebook profile, and gin-chat ko siya dayon about where can I meet her tonight to give her her money. Galing, she said that I'd just give it to her tomorrow, and it's fine.
Probably, she didn't need it so much anymore. And so, suddenly, ang plano ko for the night is ruined. Not that I feel bad about it or anything; but I was just hurrying my way out of the center kagina para ma-contact siya and mahatag ko na sa iya ang money yah kay basi she really was needing it already. But no hard feelings, 'cause suddenly also, I had an evening unfigured and all to myself.
There was this pending invitation to play a futsal game with some AIESECers in Ateneo, but I declared not going almost immediately I realized that I want this evening to be a time to treat myself some good time, on my own.
So, what I figured was to buy this month's issue of Esquire Philippines and have it accompany me for the evening at Craft Coffee Katipunan, while I read it with a cup of brewed coffee by my side.
Nagtindog ko, picked up my keys and money, and walked my way down to Craft; left my stuff still plugged in, but turned off the lights and let the room remain in the dark while I'm gone.
Sa Craft, well, pag-abot ko, the café was as relaxed as usual. Nagpungko ko sa ila nga daw lapad nga workshop table and ordered a cup of brewed coffee at the counter. Nagbakal ko sang October issue sang Esquire on my way there, so medyo gin-unpack ko pa ang plastic wrapper sang magazine before doing anything else. I remember nga sang start sang month, before even seeing the printed copy of the magazine, with its cover uploaded online the only thing I saw that's related to it, hambal ko gid dayon nga daw mas benta para sa akon ang issue sang Scout Magazine this month over it, cover-wise. But that doesn't matter now; both the issues are great.
I never knew, or I never remembered maybe, that it was Esquire's anniversary issue gali. Man, it's been four years since. And, nanamian ko, sang napaisip ko dayon, nga I could actually say that I have been with Esquire since the beginning, for four years already. Immediately, napangirit ko and napaisip ko how this issue is not just a celebration of the magazine's anniversary, but equally and sentimentally, pwede ko gid mahambal, and maki-angkin perhaps, nga celebration man ni sang years of me subscribing to the magazine, subtly fanatically maybe or whatever it was that kept me buying an issue every month, may extra money man o wala. Mahambal ko gid, honestly, nga I owe a lot to this magazine, in terms of how I started to develop how I think and look at things as a growing teenage guy, in this modern-ing world I'm in.
I remember back in high school, in Iloilo, with my best friend Tristan, we had this "thing" going on, buying monthly issues of FHM Philippines; and, it kind of became our monthly tradition going to Booksale in SM City Iloilo. Ako ang gabakal sang magazine for us two kay Tristan looks too young for his age, and is as well, nothing bad intended in saying this, too short for a senior in high school; while I, on the other hand, was average in height and could sport, or probably just looks, a bit older than my age. So, gakalusot ko sa cashier if ako ang mabakal sang magazine. She wouldn't think of even asking me if I was already above 18 years old or something, all because maybe of how my face looked like during those times. We made sure, of course, to be not wearing our school uniforms when we do the buying. And so anyway, when college started to come its way, Esquire in the Philippines was pretty much starting then and had been releasing a number of its first issues already, medyo nagka-interest ako to it and, at a time, sa madumduman ko, I was actually subscribing to both magazines. Magasto ha, if you come to think of it; that for a boy in high school to be subscribing to two almost 200-peso worth magazines every month. But I was receiving a monthly stipend from my school that time, so tingin ko wala gid ko nag-mind sadto, at the slightest.
And since then, and now four years after, I'm still as hooked and as interested as I can be every month for an issue of Esquire. My interest in FHM started to dwindle sooner after high school ended, dungan lang siguro sang times nga feeling ko nakalampas na ko sa puberty stage ko. But Esquire, somehow, it became my older brother as I continue my growing years, there with me to end my high school years and move on with my days in college in exciting Metro Manila, acting as somewhat my imaginary bro, in print and in style, through my freshman, sophomore, and so on years. This evening, as I was sipping through my cup of coffee, gakatayhum na lang gid ko as to how this magazine that had become so dear to me, almost fraternally has myself integrated to its views and way of thinking, has made the proud me, whether in partial or in whole, the young man I am today.
Maubos ko na tani basa ang magazine, cover to cover, only right after I was at the end of the article about the interview Lourd De Veyra had with Justice Antonio Carpio, sang na-realize ko nga it was almost 9:00 PM on the clock, and I haven't had my dinner yet, and that probably, si manang nagahulat na 'to sa balay para makadungan kami kaon. So, I made a dog-eared fold on the page I was ended at (not sure actually ngaa gin-ubra ko 'to.. 'cause I don't usually do that), wore my jacket on, and went to the counter to pay for my coffee. Naggwa ko sa Craft, smiling, and feeling deeply happy inside for reasons I don't exactly know why. Walked my way back home along Katipunan, and I feel so celebrated. As a reader of Esquire, sang gulpi nagsagi sa isip ko, I felt like a king, in confident knowledge that this magazine is in my cavalry.
The moon was full, and was shining bright up high; the sky clear behind it. Katipunan was slow and busy at the same time. Feeling ko I was a character in a movie scene.
