I found a few lists of essay competitions for students and decided to compile all of the relevant ones for the study of law here. RE the essay competition: I would still write about it even if I didn’t win! It’s still a good thing to have done it and been chosen to have been submitted by your school, and the fact that you’re so interested in your subject that you chose to write an essay about it in your own time shows you are clearly passionate about it. They know how few people win the competitions, (only like 6 won a prize in the Kelvin one last year), they’re not gonna judge you negatively for not winning

Hi! If I entered a Cambridge Essay Competition, but didn't win anything will it negatively affect my future application?

No, you wouldn’t have to mention it at all, and even if you apply to the same college they’re not going to have a list of all the people who entered to competition and compare it to applicants - they wouldn’t know that you’d entered unless you said something.

hey, offer holder here, just adding my experience for the essay competition anon: One the one hand, i talked about the book i used for the essay a lot in both my interviews and it was a great discussion topic, because i knew about it. One the other hand, my interviewers did kind of seem to care that i came 2nd place, so I think placement can be important too... I think the best of both worlds would be to maybe extract what you studied/read/learnt from the comp and just mention that instead?

Thanks very much! Yeah, I think it could be a good idea to talk about the extract that you studied if you feel like it’ll add to your personal statement. You don’t even need to say that you did it for the essay competition!

I entered a Cambridge essay competition and just found out that I didn't win or get highly commended. Do you think the fact that I have entered will still look good or will it look bad that I wasn't good enough to even be highly commended?

Hmm, I think... I just wouldn’t bring it up, if I were you? Like yes, it is great that you entered because it shows an interest in the subject you’re applying for and a willingness to challenge yourself, but at the same time, the people who won it/got highly commended might be applying. I’m not saying that not getting highly commended is like a major disadvantage, because quite honestly, I don’t think it’ll even come up, but if you put entering the competition in your personal statement in place of something else that might be more unique/play more to your strengths, admissions officers might look at it and be a bit confused!

Do human rights competitions look good on applications? I plan to apply for history and it was an essay competition on human rights so the skills used in history are similar but would the admissions tutors see it this way or would they just pass over it as an extracurricular rather than a relevant competition? I have entered a history competition but I wanted to do the human rights one as I was genuinely interested in it and it wasn't just to look good on my CV, it's just a bonus if it does

Yes, I think that sounds like it will be really good in your personal statement - the link with History is pretty clear imo, and also you can take the opportunity to make it as explicit/obvious as possible in writing the statement, and directly argue that it demonstrates you have the right interests and skill set. :)

Hey, I'm a potential international student who might apply to Cambridge in the fall. I'm entering into the Vellacott History Prize competition Peterhouse holds every year. Any advice? Also, will winning, potentially, increase my chances of being accepted?

Hey! I don’t think winning would substantially increase your chances of being accepted, but it’d definitely be something really great to put on your CV, or talk about in your personal statement/interview.

I don’t know much about essay competitions tbh, but make sure that you’re arguing a point vs just listing facts (as it can be pretty easy to do in history!) Good luck!
