Tips for writing essays

I know you hear this all the time and I know you say to yourself "it won't take long to do, I'll do it at the end" DO NOT leaving your referencing till the end is like running a marathon then discovering the finish line is up a flight of stairs. Yes, on its own it's not a long or hard job, but after all the work you've just done it will feel like it. Plus if you're pretty tight with the deadline you're going to be so glad you referenced as you went. • read the question. Break it down into its components and right a sentence or two explaining how you will address these components. Slap an opening sentence to give context at the start of all this and you've got yourself a bomb ass introduction. • turn that introduction into a conclusion. Remind us again how you proved/discussed to points you addressed in your introduction. Round it off with a nice little concluding sentence. • ration out your word count. In most cases when writing an essay you'll only be allowed a 10% either way leeway, so you need to make sure you're going to hit the target. Those points you made in your intro? They're the topic of your inner paragraphs. Split them up into sub points and assign a word count to each. What these sub points are depends on the nature of the essay question, but an example is: -define argument a -define argument b -evaluate argument a -evaluate argument b -compare arguments Ideally (though this might vary depending on the word count) these sub points should be around 100-200 words, not too big, not too small. If you find that you need to write way more than that, split that sub point again cos its too big e.g. -evaluate aspect x of argument a -evaluate aspect y of argument a • divide up the workload across the days before the deadline. If possible, aim to have it completed 1-2 days before the deadline in case of an emergency, such as sickness or printer troubles. Also, the thought of a couple hundred words a day is a lot easier to manage than 2000 words in a week. • stick to your goals. Don't think "oh it's only a couple hundred words it won't be too difficult to manage it along with tomorrow's workload" yes it will and you will hate yourself. • if at any point you are stuck or don't think you'll make the deadline, email your teacher/professor. Chances are they can point you in the right direction to find some really great resources or will be willing to give you a couple days more to finish your work. Email them as soon as you encounter your problem, as it will reflect better on you if you do it now rather than the day before or on the day it's due.
