I am so glad I took history last year. It really hammered good essay technique into me. I ended up resorting to a highlighting technique for paragraphs for 'topic sentence, argument for, argument against, conclusion' and when I do essays here I think about that now, so I look to make sure my essay is properly structured and makes sense, rather than just rambling and having no idea what's going on in it. I also think about playing sources off one another and using various ones to substantiate them, which comes from one of my coursework essays where we had four interpretations and we had to compare their arguments and them as evidence.
It also taught me how to do a bibliography, research and thorough referencing. I remember my history coursework teacher saying that history coursework was the closest we were going to get to university work whilst still at A-level and I think he was absolutely right. More than anything else, I see the essay and research techniques I learned in history last year coming up in every essay I do. Every time I do an essay here, it feels like history coursework condensed into a few days. It makes me feel like I had an age to do the work last year, but also like I accomplish a lot when I manage to do it here.
History's the subject to take, folks.
