A broken-hearted child who was severely scolded and reprimanded all because they were trying to be kind, now hesitates to help even when asked. Constantly terrified they are going to be shouted at for doing even the smallest thing for anyone. They've taken to isolating themselves, afraid of being around others, and in need of a lot of therapy.

Old enough to know better. It was true. Wyn Techie had been educated in Havenworlder Safety Steps since ze was old enough to understand them. Yet ze had thought that ze was doing something kind.

It was the opposite of kind.

Da had said ze was smart enough to find trouble and silly enough to get into it and honestly? That was accurate. So now ze was in Early Medik Training, learning how to do everything properly. Including how to don and fit a Medik's livesuit, and then undergo the thorough cleaning process to get all of hir Deathworlder germs off it.

Learn first aid, please

Of all the things that aren't taught in school, I don't think I've ever heard much about this one, but it might be one of the most important.

People need to know first aid. They need to know how to clean and disinfect a wound. You need to know this. Yes you, the person reading this.

I grew up with three nurses in my close adult circles, so I learned pretty early on how to do very basic first aid, and these days I pretty much always have a very basic first aid kit on my person just in case.

But when I was in college I learned that not only is that knowledge uncommon at that age, I was the only one on my entire dorm floor that had anything resembling a first aid kit, and not many knew how to deal with even a basic cut on their own. For four years I was basically the nurse of my floor.

I'm not even talking about getting certified in First Aid (although that's very good and if you can you should) or CPR (again, extremely good and if you can you should). I'm just talking about basic wound care. Start there. Formal certifications cost money and that's a barrier, but there are medical professionals who have youtube channels covering basic wound care, and that's a great place to start.

You could literally save someone's life, even with just basic wound care. Infections are bad y'all.

The concept of higher education is older than many might think. Basic learning covers the essentials everyone needs to know. Life skills, manners, standards of cleanliness and dress. As a civilisation gets more complicated, the basics expand.

So to do the levels of education.

Some use this to hold themselves above others. Hence the term "higher education'. A polity without class distinctions might use terms like, "specified education" but they rarely catch on.
