You are so good at the makeup stuff, Charlie, Esteban had said, I wish I knew how to do things like you do. Charles had known then, and knows now, that it’s just Esteban entertaining her, the way she used to when they were kids, the way Esteban entertained Arthur when she babysat him. She smiles and nods and tries to remember one or two interests so she can ask about it to feign interest, to make someone feel special. It used to make Charles feel special, in a subtle way that Charles always repressed, but now it just makes her angry, because Esteban is— She is pretending. She does not mean it. She has built up walls and wariness and will not let Charles into those walls in any meaningful way because Charles cannot be taken seriously, and worse, Charles cannot be trusted. Esteban is kind to Charles, but Esteban understands Charles as Pierre’s spy, as someone she cannot rely on, as someone who will backstab her in order to curry favor from Pierre, and that is not something Esteban would let happen. Or, well, would not let happen again. This is why Pierre is the one that needs to apologize.
In which Esteban Ocon gets a new teammate in the shape of one Oliver Bearman, Charles Leclerc slowly and steadily gets more deranged, Pierre Gasly is nowhere to be found, and Lewis Hamilton watches on from a safe distance.
