In light of recent events I really think that the whole F1 community, and all other RPF communities, need to relearn some basic fandom etiquette, and this is a great place to start

with that being said, my work is not to be spread or spoken about on any platform that I did not post it on, and certainly nowhere where any of the subjects of my work could be directly interacting with it. I try to avoid even tagging ship content with generic fandom names in rpf because someone looking for oscar is probably not actually looking for maxcar dynamics content (please also try to avoid this when reblogging my work but im not a stickler for that on tumblr dot com of all places and sometimes mistakenly do it myself anyway)

I've lived through j2 and destiel, I've lived through klance, I've written works with the anne-rice-fearing copyright disclaimers in them, if you find my ao3 before i link it i have kpop rpf fics up and ive been part of kpop twt. creators do their best to protect themselves and the subjects of their work from these situations and people like to ruin it, please dont be those people. it is beyond ridiculous that this still happens. it is beyond selfish on the part of any "fan" who conflates rpf fandom space with the rpf subject.

Just. Be respectful. Christ.

Decided to fully move in to tumblr and make my twitter account private after this whole mess! I expect to post more in here, but old habits die hard so it will be a slow transition from twitter. I’ve left tumblr years ago and had been on twitter for the damnei fandom for at least 6 years now. But now that I’ve recently joined the F1 fandom and saw how utterly insane people are in F1twt and Tiktok, I’ve decided it’s for the best to keep my twitter account private and bring my content to here! Hope this get better soon, for it’s a very horrible situation!

following my last post about fandom etiquette. don't forget to be kind to the writers who provide the fics you love. they are people too who are sharing parts of themselves that are sometimes very very personal and vulnerable. click the kudos button, leave a comment, show your appreciation, be their friend, and cherish them before it's too late.

Something happened to one of my friends the other day that I think makes for a really salient allegory for the current situation in the F1 fandom with regards to RPF. CW: discussions of pet death, the butchering of livestock, and allusions to eating disorders

My friend, who for the sake of this story, I'm going to call Marie, is an animal lover. She volunteers with animal rescues, has several pets and fosters, and cares and worries deeply about the local wildlife. (She actually had a small crashout today about a bird that flew into her window and died, but that's another story.)

She's also the kind of person who feels her feelings deeply, and she still grieves and mourns every pet and foster she's ever lost. Marie is also really sensitive about animal welfare in general and would be a vegetarian if she could be. She actually was a vegetarian for a long time, but she ended up getting really sick and practically starving to death despite eating what ought to have been a perfectly adequate diet. Long story short, she medically can't be a vegetarian. So she really has to compartmentalize about the concept of how the meat she has to eat becomes the meat she has to eat.

Part of this includes avoiding content that discusses the treatment and welfare of livestock or that describes or demonstrates slaughter and butchering. Marie is aware of the existence of this content, obviously, and she understands that there is a purpose to its existence, that the creation of the vast majority of it isn't malicious or even designed to shock or upset people. However, she doesn't want to see it, and I imagine that most people who are creating this content for educational purposes, demonstrative purposes, or even in some cases, benevolent activism purposes (so, not PETA) wouldn't want their content shown to someone like Marie, who would be disturbed and upset by it.

Because Marie is a sane individual, she doesn't go to places on the internet where she might come across this content. She also doesn't interact with content that might cause the algorithm to show her content about the raising and butchering of livestock for food. However, as an animal lover, a pet owner, and someone who has experienced the loss of a pet, she does get a lot of content about these topics.

What she never expected was to come across was a video in her feed that appeared at the beginning to be someone talking about the illness and euthanization of their pet rabbit only to transition to them discussing and demonstrating how they then butchered and ate it.

Now, that might not bother some people. For me, I find the idea of eating an animal I once considered a companion to be distasteful (no pun intended), but I also understand how some people see this as a completely normal thing, particularly if you grew up on a farm. But for Marie, this isn't just a bit weird or slightly upsetting, it's horrifying.

The algorithm presented her with content about pet death--something she views and interacts with regularly--but it was also about something she never wanted to see, never asked to see, and should have never been forced to see. And it's likely that she never would have. I don't know who originally made the video or where it had first been posted, but it seemed like the kind of content that might be common on certain farming and homesteading groups. But Marie encountered it on an account about pet loss (that she doesn't follow) that had reposted it, and the algorithm showed her because the account was similar to ones she does follow.

If it had been me, and I think if it had been many of us, we'd have been disturbed for a little bit but ultimately have gone on with our lives no worse for the wear. But for Marie, who already has to carefully balance some cognitive dissonance over the fact that she has to at least sometimes eat meat, it has kind of sent parts of her life crashing down over the past few days. Right now, she can barely stand to look at meat, let alone prepare and eat it, and her appetite in general has practically gone to zero because images of the rabbit being cleaned and butchered in the video have basically turned intrusive.

She's now worried that she's once again going to slowly starve and go through all the awful things she had to go through when she learned the very hard way that she can't entirely be a vegetarian all because someone posted content that was perfectly fine and acceptable in one space in a space where it absolutely didn't belong.

Stop the rpf x original source incest!!! Some things should love each other from a respectful distance, we don't need to get closer.

i haven't personally read zero cycle so take this lightly but it's honestly so worrying in this fandom that it's difficult to have an extremely popular and beloved fic last just because of not keeping the rpf to rpf spaces. so many amazing fics that have been shared and cherished in fandom spaces can no longer have that anymore because with it comes its own adverse effects, including the fact that eventually a larger and larger percentage of its readers don't completely understand what a sensitive matter rpf is and that it must be treated with much more care than regular fics. we have violated so many boundaries not only regarding the fic and the author itself, but also rpf boundaries in general.

"keep rpf in rpf spaces" is a phrase we repeat a lot in rpf spaces itself. however, it may not be obvious to their readers whose only exposure to rpf spaces is ao3, who then go to more popular non rpf spaces where real people can read it. which is understandable to an extent, because it's their only place to discuss it and they don't know about rpf etiquette yet. so the way people treat fics will never stop being a problem until rpf etiquette is talked about in the actual places causing problems, and not just leaving etiquette as something that is discussed in rpf spaces. etiquette is universal, and it is not a violation of it to talk about it on instagram or twitter or tiktok. it is necessary to have difficult discussions about it because that's the only way anything will change.

i feel like everything important about the zc situation has been said by people who have put it way better than i ever could, but it feels like the right moment to thank some people.

thank you to everyone who writes fics for huge ships, even if it feels like there‘s an abundance of stories already. thank you to everyone who writes fics for rarepairs, even if the pool of potential readers is incredibly small. thank you to everyone who creates fanart, whether it‘s a quick sketch in procreate or a really elaborate piece you spent hours on.

thank you to people creating heartbreaking web weaves. thank you to people creating gifs and f1 incorrect quotes and moodboards and memes and edits. thank you to people sharing their thoughts and headcanons and prompts.

thank you to everyone who (respectfully!) comments, sends in asks or reblogs and leaves some encouring words in the tags and thus motivates others to keep creating. you are just as essential to the fandom as the people creating the things you engage with.

thank you to everyone who adheres to rpf etiquette and archive locks their fics on ao3, posts about ships only on tumblr, ao3 and private discord servers and refrains from sharing fics or even refering to the ships outside of fandom spaces.

and lastly, thank you to everyone who respects other fans, writers and artists. take care of yourself and others. i‘m so grateful for you all <3
