"If you ever make me do this again, you're going to have to pay me the big bucks. The amount of sneering I had to do today - watch, I swear my face will be permanently set this way by tomorrow."
Name: Ethan Bartlett
Age: 42
Current Residence: Long Island, New York
Background: Ethan's story begins in the white picket fence area of The Hamptons which forms the South Fork of Long Island, New York. His father, Rupert, was a doctor and his mother, Diane, stayed at home, raising four children, three brothers named Carl, Jack, and David, and a sister, Mary, on her own while his father provided for the family. With his father hardly around, his mother took on the dual role of mother and father, often leading her to smothering her children in overprotectiveness. When his father decided to make his presence known, the man would come home and show his family just who was the patriarch. His brothers, considering they were all older than Ethan, would always be exempt from the beatings that Rupert gave, considering that they were set to inherit everything, and it would often fall to Ethan to protect Mary from his father. His mother, having been beaten into submission by Rupert, would remain in the other room, ignoring her two youngest children's cries. That was strike one.
Strike two consisted of some of the next door neighbors beating him up on his way home from school one day, tossing him into a ditch and leaving him alone for hours with no way to get home due to a broken ankle. His mother found him hours later and, true to her nature, proceeded to smother her boy in affection, which Ethan resented.
Strike three was his brothers taunting him, at the age of 15, for helping his little sister, who was five at the time, to learn how to dance ballet. He had hardly thought anything of it for after all, what were big brothers for? Despite the taunting, the lesson continued, but that only made Ethan want to get back at his brothers, his entire family in general, all except for his sister.
One night, he went to his sister's room and picked her up out of bed, calming her fears that something was wrong and promising that he would protect her. It wasn't until they reached the harbor that the house exploded, disrupting the houses around them and causing quite a scene. The media called them lucky to be alive, but Ethan knew better. Child services were called in and after deeming there were no more family members left, the two of them were sent to a foster home.
It was there that Ethan met and befriended James. The two of them became close and it was James whom Ethan confided in about what he had done to his family, to protect his sister, but more importantly to protect himself. Finding an ally in James, the two of them were moved together in foster homes, Mary included. It was on their third move that Mary became sick and the family that was supposed to take care of them noticed too late to save the child, resulting in Mary's death and the snap in Ethan's state of mind.
Pretty soon, he and James were separated when James turned eighteen, leaving Ethan alone to fend for himself. When Ethan's eighteenth birthday rolled around, the teenager found out that his father left quite a large amount of money to whoever was the last remaining family member in the event of his death.
Naturally, Ethan took his time, building up the newly inherited fortune and trying to find his old friend. He succeeded once in finding him, in fact he was the one whom James bought the drugs from the day the police showed up, and when his friend was arrested, he tried everything he could to get his friend out, but it was no use.
Ethan spent the years intent on trying to get James out of jail, but every time, he was denied. When his friend was released, he spoke to James, learning just why he had been imprisoned and when James moved to New Haven to deliver his own justice to Sarah, it was Ethan who funded everything and paid off the law enforcement if it was necessary.
Now, Ethan is intent on making things like they were in the old days. He does not care who James may have come to befriend or who he cares for now. He may have lost his sister by fate, his family by his own hand, and James to the courts once, but not again. This time, things are going back to the way they were and only by miraculous intervention will anyone who tries to break up his plans survive.
Personality: He exudes a cold demeanor and he will not be pleasant to talk to. He will degrade, demean, and taunt your character if he is in the mood to do so. If he is not in the mood to chat, he will clearly tell you so, giving you only one warning in which to either run because you realize it would be futile to try and continue conversation or you run after him, resulting in him possibly attacking your character out of pure spite and frustration.
When he gets to the point where he finds that your character is worth his time, continue to expect the snide remarks he makes, albeit toned down just a bit, and, on occasion, a fleeting smile across his face. Keep in mind that this is only on very special occasions. He has respect for only two people in this world and that is James and, when she was alive, Mary. Everyone else has to earn it, but even then, it may not turn out in their favor.
Characteristics: He carries a small hunting knife on his person at all times as well as a SIG Sauer P226. The weapons are always concealed and he will only bring them out if the need to do is called for or if he has another reason such as protecting someone.
In a situation, he will always leave the others to die first. If someone he cares about is being held against their will or they do not have a way of getting out, he will move heaven and earth to get them out and he does not care how many lives he has to take until it is completed.
If it has come to the point where the decision rests on wether it is he who dies or someone he cares about, then he will always surrender first to give the other person a chance to get out.
He has no boundary limit. If he wants to get into your personal space, he will do it. He does not care if you're uncomfortable or uneasy with the limited space. He simply cares for no one's needs but his own and that is how he prefers things.
Basically, he will kill if necessary, torture if necessary, do many things that are frowned upon in society if necessary to get the information and facts that he needs. If someone he loves/cares about is injured or hurt in any way shape or form, the same will be given to those who would dare hurt them. An eye for an eye, if you will.
