Charity

It felt like I hadn’t slept at all, when in fact I know I had, I was so nervous about starting as a attending, not just that, it was the pressure I knew I would now be under, now that I have completed my residency, it was going to be my job to help the other residents who are new to this. I hear the alarm go but I nuzzle my head into the pillow, just for a moment.

“Rookie” Ethan’s husky morning voice hums softly into my ear and I turn over, and I open my eyes, he is resting his weight on his arm as he gives me a look, gently, he caresses my face with his thumb, he gently presses a kiss to my lips.

“It's my first day as an attending” I whisper, I still can’t quite believe it, that all that hard work finally paid off, as exciting as it may be. The nerves have started to really eat me up, I can’t lie. I keep my gaze on Ethan who is looking at me with an immense look of pride on his face. I feel my heart melt, to think all that time ago he was just an attending I occasionally worked with on paediatric and obstetrics patients, and now we live in his apartment together.

“And I could not be prouder of you” he whispers and our lips join together, I close my eyes, feeling dizzy from the feeling of being totally overwhelmed. I take a deep breath and Ethan clears his throat.

“I best get ready then” I smile and he nods, smiling back at me. He gets out of bed.

“I will make you a coffee Rookie” he smiles and I smile gratefully at him, i am the luckiest girl in the world to have him. As he walks out the door, I hear my phone vibrate and I lean over to see my grandpa’s face flash on the screen. I smile to myself as I pick it up, pressing the answer button.

“Hello” I say.

“Morning sweetheart, its Granddad” My granddad Ken Middleton, who was once a world renowned surgeon, says.

“Morning Granddad” I smile. I can hear my grandmother Beryl, one of the longest serving matrons at their local hospital in the background.

“I just wanted to ring you to tell you how proud I am of you and your grandmother, how are you feeling?” Granddad speaks softly. I smile.

“I am good, thank you, very nervous” I say. Its true, coming from a family with two patriarchs (My granddad and my dad) being doctors always has made me feel like I have to prove myself.

“I can imagine, but you will be amazing, its the proudest day of our life and your fathers life, that you are an attending paediatric diagnostician and surgeon” My granddad speaks and I feel a lump form in my throat. Having my two of the four most important of the men in my life being proud of me means a lot to me.

“I love you so much, Granddad” I respond.

“I love you too, give them hell kiddo” My granddad chuckles, “don’t let that boyfriend of yours be bossy either, you are his equal now” I can hear the smile in granddad’s voice, and it brings me so much joy.

“I won’t, I love you and Grandma so much” I say.

“Me and Grandma love you so much too, darling, ring us later” Granddad says and I hang up, and I take a deep breath. I feel my phone vibrate again and see a text from my Dad.

“Good morning my love, I have been called in to see a patient so won’t get to call you this morning, but you got this. Me and Da love you more than you will ever know and we are so proud of you. X”

I smile and send a text back and see a facebook notification and I open it, to see a photo of me and Sienna the day we both got our results from the end of our paediatric residency. I read the caption “My bestie and I did it, we are now paediatric attendings and we are staying together, Best friends forever”

“Rookie, aren’t you meant to be getting ready for work?” I hear and see Ethan walk in, wearing his usual shirt, tie and trousers. He looks at me bemused.find a

“I am just going to get ready” I roll my eyes and I get out of bed, and I go through to my room, which Ethan kindly turned into a dressing room, I pick out a light blue ruffled blouse and a black pencil skirt with a belt with a little diamond embellishment on. I quickly brush my hair and pop it in my plait and I pop my clothes off, I look at my make-up box and consider if I really need to pop any makeup on, I am sure Ethan would say I won’t need it. I choose not to wear any today. I walk through to the kitchen where Ethan is waiting for me. He passes me a mug of coffee and I have a sip, the caffeine is so going to be needed today, I know that much.

“I am really proud of you, you know” Ethan says as he presents me with a plate with toasted bagel, with cream cheese and smoked salmon on it. I take a bite of the food as I nod, if anyone hasn’t shut up about how proud they are, its Ethan.

“I know you are, E” I smile and he nods, he sips his own coffee, and smiles. He sits next to me.

“I just want you to know it, and know how much I love you” He says and I smile, once again, I have no doubt of that. He constantly tells me and shows me just how much he loves me, even the small little gestures of making me breakfast show me.

“It will be weird walking into the hospital as a attending instead of a resident” I murmur and he nods.

“But do you think you feel different?” He asks and I pause eating as I consider his question, he continues, “if you ask me, you are one of the most humble, down to earth doctors who work at that hospital, I don’t suspect you will let the power that comes with being a attending get to your head”

I chuckle at what he says, he is right there, I do remember some of the attendings I worked with in paediatrics where very in the view they were better than us residents, even though they had all been in our shoes. “I want to be like what you were to me, fair but firm, and I want my residents to know that I am there to help them learn and develop and expect respect from them” I speak and he smiles.

“I think you will be a very fair attending, Rookie” he replies and I smile as I eat. We eat our breakfast in a comfortable silence.

Before long, its time to go to the hospital, I pop on a pair of flats and grab my bag. The drive to the hospital, Ethan holds my hand and I smile, feeling so much love.

Once we arrive at the hospital, we walk hand in hand into the building, the two of us. There is a load of new residents and interns in the foyer, but we walk through to where the attending offices are.

“Shouldn’t you be going down to your office” I ask and he smiles at me. He leads me through a corridor, we pass his office and we walk together, through a few corridors and he passes me the key to it.

“I asked Naveen if you could have this office, because no one has ever used it and through the next corridor is access to all paediatric wards” Ethan spoke and I frown, I am sure I was just going to get a bog standard office. I unlock the door and walk in, the office is modern, and there is a large desk, with a little fridge. There is cabinets and there is a sofa

I smile and I notice a big bouquet of flowers on the table with a gift bag. “What is this?” I ask him as I pop my bag and coat on the hook, grabbing one of my new white coats.

“A little something” Ethan smiles and I go to the gift bag and I pull out a new hot drink flask, its light pink with calligraphy saying my name on.

“This is so sweet Ethan” I smile and I dig into the bag and see he bought me some chocolates and I smile.

“There are a few more presents in there” He says, “but those can be opened later, this one is the one I want you to have now” he picks out a box that is wrapped. I open it, and see a leather case, I look at Ethan and he smiles, encouraging me to open it. I open it and gasp. Inside is a gold plated white stethoscope.

“Ethan I love it, thank you” I smile and I kiss him, he deepens the kiss slightly.

“You’re welcome Rookie, I love you” He whispers and I smile. We both notice the time and we decide to make our way to the foyer for the welcome to the new residents and interns, hand in hand.

I’m sorry, but I just have to make a post about that last diamond scene in Chapter 11, OH2 cuz it’s literal perfection and can’t get it out of my head. (I’m writing as someone who’s playing as F!MC and is romancing Jackie but I think most things apply to the other LIs.)

This scene despite having to spend 25 diamonds and being rather short, I think it was the best diamond scene I’ve ever read in any LI x MC scene. It was beautifully heartbreaking and I’ve never seen PB write any scene like this. No sex, no kisses, no sickeningly sweet and cute dialogues or actions, just two people being with each other in the moment and yet, they managed to portray them in a way that shows that they deeply care for each other.

Jackie staying behind and MC seeing tears in her eyes, MC regretting that she might not ever be able to kiss Jackie or feel her heartbeat ever again, Jackie reassuring her, trying to convince her that she will. The realisation and admitting to MC that she is the most important thing to Jackie and them holding onto each other. Not to mention that everything Jackie does and says in this chapter is her. There’s not a line written for someone else that they were too lazy to change, it was all Jackie.

PB perfectly captured the tragic, intense, intimate and emotional interaction between two characters, one on their deathbed. They just want to spend their possible last moment together despite not being able to touch and hold each other, skin-to-skin so they have to make do with what they can but MC is terrified she’ll never feel Jackie’s skin again.

So she kisses Jackie’s hand through the glove, desperate for some kind of contact with her, wanting to feel her. Knowing that Jackie felt that kiss, even if it was just a little, MC was at peace with that. They couldn’t feel each other and touch each other properly but they could still hold onto each other as they slept and that was enough because it had to be.

The comfort MC must have felt, being waken up to stabbing pain but having Jackie be there to reassure her that she was alright. The relieve between the two of them when they found out MC was going to be alright. You could feel it in the way this entire scene was written because it was written incredibly.

Prescribing Myself a Lazy Day

Setting - This is set where they are married and don’t have kids but Charity is a paediatric doctor.

Prompt - Day 2 ‘Lazy Day’ @choicesfebchallenge

Summary - After a hard few weeks of work, a day off means a lazy day.....

The past few weeks had been some of the busiest of the year, there had been loads of incidents, even a medical emergency of a colleague and a outbreak of Norovirus. Not to mention the tedious interviews of potential interns and Ethan had gotten to the point a day off was all he and his newly wedded wife Charity needed.

The paediatric doctor had felt it herself as well, she had been so exhausted with the research her head of department had asked her to be a part of and the pressure of her new role, and the new responsibilities that she was undertaking and the fact she was responsible for helping train the new residents who came specifically for the paediatric programme that Edenbrook offered.

They were both still sat in bed, Ethan has grabbed them both a drink, a fruit tea for charity since at the moment she had been drinking far too much caffeine and wanted a day off the stuff and himself a coffee. The two of them both sat in a comfortable silence. Charity had been showered and then decided it was the day where after her shower, she was going to put on her comfy lounge wear she got for their wedding presents and go back to bed.

“I literally don’t want to do anything today” she confessed as she dramatically threw herself on the bed after placing the drink on her bedside table. Ethan couldn’t blame her, they had been so busy recently.

“I don’t think I do to be honest, even if there are stuff that we need to do” The older doctor confessed and Charity grabbed her mug, talking another sip of the Apple and Cinnamon tea.

“That other stuff can wait though” Charity argued, Ethan frowned, could it though? They had some washing to do, and Jenner would need a walk eventually.

“But what if Jenner needs a walk, then we have to take him” Ethan argued, and Charity just groaned. She was aching from how much she had been stood up the past couple of days with no rest and she was wanting to rest so badly.

“I want to rest too but we need to think, we may get hungry and may require some food at some point” He reminds her after a moment of silence and Charity just groaned. Yes, she loved her husband a lot and yes, he was a wonderful husband, but she demanded a lazy day.

“We have food in the kitchen” she responded, stifling a yawn, she really could do with a bit more sleep to honest, but Jenner woke her up to be fed and refused to wake Ethan up, and she thought herself and Jenner were close, bad pup.

“I know but what if you don’t want any of that for dinner later and what if you are not willing to cook” Ethan argued and Charity heaved a sigh of ‘oh my god, please shut up’. However, she knew he was right, and she knew he knew how hangry she could get.

“Takeaway” she suggested, and Ethan scoffed. He wasn’t over keen on takeaways, he was a healthy person but to be fair to his wife, they had some good local takeaways nearby. Maybe the food was processed and maybe not the healthy stuff he recommended patients but if it made her happy and it was clear she wasn’t willing to budge on this, he would comply for her.

“Fine” he grumbled, and he just wrapped an arm around her. She just was so hard to say no to when she was tired and clearly in a very stubborn mood.

“I love you” she whispered, and he kissed her softly, he loved her just as much.

“I love you too, and maybe we can just enjoy each other's company today” he decided, even if she had already said that she was going to do nothing all day. Today was her lazy day after the madness at work.

“I mean I'm going to chill anyway because I have prescribed myself a lazy day” she says casually, and the slight roll of his eyes was inevitable. The two of them spent a lazy day together, unwinding from work and the madness that had been, it was a much-needed lazy day.
