The takeaways I can bring forth in my personal practices would be to prioritize transparency by disclosing partnerships and collaborations to display honest reviews and feedback towards sponsorships. Another takeaway for personal practices would be to respect privacy. Protecting individuals’ personal information and data and following privacy guidelines. Adhering to this principle will help build credibility with audiences. On the other hand, the main concepts I would use for personal conduct online would be integrity and accountability for one’s actions.  By upholding integrity and authenticity in all types of communication conveys honesty and responsibility. Another example of main concept I would conduct online personally is accountability. Taking accountability for my actions and correcting mistakes I’ve made would display matureness and transparency when correcting myself promptly online. A main concept I strongly oppose to is interacting in or spreading fake news and violating privacy. I choose not to like, share, or comment on fake news and articles that are from unverified sources that can also mislead my audience. Overstepping privacy boundaries is another main concept I avoid on social media. I don’t share anyone’s information such as pictures, videos, or post with their consent. I believe permission from individuals included in a picture or video should be given as this violates their privacy and oversteps their boundaries. Five core concepts that will follow me as a practicing social media professional would are ethical advertising, inclusivity promotion, staying up to date, accuracy, and truthfulness. By practicing core concepts such as ethical advertising this ensures all promotional content accommodates to ethical guidelines. Also, promoting diversity and inclusivity will help produce engaging content with interactions. Staying up to date on modern practices and upcoming trends in social media ethics will help me foster more engaging content that draws in interactions. Being accurate and verifying facts before sharing information is another core concept that will follow me as a social media professional. By backchecking information and confirming information is correct before sharing to the audience. Lastly truthfulness and transparency will be one of my main core concepts that will follow me. By clearly disclosing any problems or collaborations with brands to convey honesty to the audience. These principles will guide my efforts to create a positive and ethical online presence as a social media professional. Shikiala Fasan Brands that utilize proper social media ethical practices are TOMS and Nike. The brand TOMS utilizes social media ethical practices by presenting their social impact message. The brand is known for its “One for One” message where they donate a pair of shoes for everyone sold. On social media TOMS transparency on where they donate their shoes and the impact of their initiatives. By this brand sharing updates and stories about the communities they support. This brand displays the brands use of social media ethical practices by connecting with their audience and showcasing their honesty when they state their message “One for One”. TOMS utilizes proper social media ethics by engaging with their audience. By them actively interacting with the community and encouraging their audience to share their review and experience wearing their shoes fosters a sense of connecting with their audience and their purpose. Another brand that properly utilizes social media ethical practices is Nike. Nike is well known for its diverse and inclusive campaigns. These campaigns promote equality and empowerment. Nike uses their platform to connect and create with the audience by amplifying the voices of various communities and this aligns with ethical standards of inclusivity and representation. These brands engage and accommodate their audience and display a constant ethical stance on social media platforms. Like the brands Nike and TOMS many professionals practice strong ethical practices, for example therapists or psychologists. These professionals are mindful of protecting clients’ privacy by avoiding sharing client information, case details and refraining from interacting with clients on social media. By these professional exercising these ethical practices show the boundaries set in place to protect the clients.

In this blog post, I am going to talk about current state of social media trends, current cases related to social media, code of ethics by a professional organization, and how brands are utilizing social media along with other social media related concepts and practices within the industry. In today’s age social media has become a daily use to our lives by influencing hoe we share information, communicate and engage globally. Trends in the industry involve brands and influencers to be transparent and authentic. There is growing demand for influencers and brands to be honest and display their genuine self or results of the brand. Influencers also have collaborations with brands and sponsors where the audience expects transparency and honesty in their reviews of the products being advertised. Another example of a trend happening in the social media industry is the rise of misinformation being spread. Fake news is created and posted on social media daily and some of the audience may have a hard time distinguishing misinformation. With platforms implementing stricter content moderation polices it can still be a challenge for some to tell its fake news. As this trend surfaces social media there are efforts in place to combat misinformation. Two notable cases related to social media ethics are the Cambridge Analytica data scandal and Twitter’s currently call X approach to moderating hate speech and creating a hateful conduct policy. The Cambridge Analytica Data Scandal case highlighted problems of data privacy and improper sharing of Facebook users’ data with third parties’ companies such as the consulting firm Cambridge Analytica. Over 87 million Facebook users’ data was compromised leading to a class action lawsuit. Another recent case related to social media ethics was X’s content moderation policies. X had faced backlash over how hate speech, misinformation, promotion of violence that has now been addressed. This platform has provided user tools along with moderation to help prohibit various forms of hateful conduct. An organization that offers a comprehensive code of ethics that would be a beneficial factor in me being interested in joining their team would be The American National Red Cross nonprofit organization. The Red Cross organization social media code of ethics are to read, understand and comply with all proportions of the code along with the policies, act with integrity and cooperation with any internal investigations into reports of unethical behavior, honesty and respect while complying with the code and lastly to speak up if you become aware of possible violations of the code, Red Cross policies and laws. These codes emphasize principles such as advocacy, expertise, professionalism and honesty along with their goal and mission influences me to become part of their social media management team.
