Which Is Really Better for the Planet: Recycled Polyester or Organic Cotton?

Both recycled polyester and organic cotton have sustainability credentials—but choosing the better option depends on the impact you’re measuring. Recycled polyester gives plastic bottles a second life. It keeps waste out of landfills and oceans, and uses up to 59% less energy than virgin polyester. It's durable, lightweight, and doesn't rely on farmland. But it sheds microplastics with every wash, polluting water systems and entering the food chain.

Organic cotton avoids synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. It uses less water and creates healthier soil. It’s biodegradable and gentle on skin. But it still requires large areas of land, and yields are lower than conventional cotton, which means more land may be needed to produce the same amount.

If you’re reducing plastic pollution, recycled polyester seems like the hero. If you’re protecting soil and biodiversity, organic cotton may be the better choice. But neither is perfect. Polyester stays in the environment for centuries. Organic cotton farming still consumes water and can lead to land competition with food crops.

The best option? Use both thoughtfully. Choose organic cotton for basics that touch the skin. Choose recycled polyester for outerwear and performance gear. And most importantly, buy less and wear longer. Sustainability begins with conscious consumption.
