It is a collection of websites and apps, such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok etc., that allows connections between people and sharing of contents (photos, videos, and texts). Many young people these days belong to at least one social media platform and use it as a major form of entertainment. But social media when used correctly, can be more than an entertainment tool; it can be a powerful tool for learning, awareness, and societal development. Social media platforms contain educational contents and skill-based knowledge on many topics and fields of learning. There are online tutorials, courses, and informational content that ensure continuous learning , through which youths can undergo self-development. It is also a powerful tool for communication and the exchange of ideas. Some platforms encourage users to share their thoughts and raise awareness on societal values, health, the environment, and other important topics. Youths can also connect on a global scale, increasing communication and networking while encouraging collaboration and idea sharing. It is also a platform and outlet for creativity and innovation. It encourages innovation and provides a platform for the showcase of creative ideas and work. Youths are able to express themselves (through arts, writing, content creation, business ideas etc.) , and this helps to bring about positive contributions to the society. Though social media can be a powerful tool when used correctly, it can be quite distracting. Hence, the need for discipline and adequate time management. Youths should be encouraged to use these platforms for positive developments in other to benefit themselves and the society and they should be discouraged from using it to spread harmful contents and misinformation. In conclusion, social media is a powerful tool for positive changes in the society if used responsibly and with purpose. Young people should aspire to us it in educating, inspiring and building society. A positive digital engagement goes a long way in making society better in the digital world we find ourselves in.
