That’s the odd thing because my husband and I have talked about it. It’s not just about sexual non-monogamy. We’re allowed to have companionate and emotional and romantic relationships with multiple partners. We communicate about all that so everybody is on the same page. For us, it’s just an easier way to communicate about it because in Nebraska people are like, “Are you a swinger?” Its like, well, it’s kind of the next step after that I suppose from the popular understanding of what swinging and open relationships are, but then bringing the concepts of polyamory into it is more reserved for spaces like this and sex positive spaces rather than the real-world Nebraska spaces. An open relationship, for us, means we are ethically sexually non-monogamous but we also have companionate and intimate relationships with people.

Brian and Anna moving in together back in March of 2016
Brian: I think that visibility would be huge for me. One of the biggest hurdles is that people assume I don’t love Anna because we’re non-monogamous. There are so many assumptions that people have. A lot of time, the first thirty minutes of a conversation about it is my educating people to what it really means. People assume that we’re not committed or that one of us is being taken advantage of.
Anna: And it’s always me because I’m the woman. I’ve had a lot of reactions that are like, “Oh he’s taking advantage of you! Why are going along with this”? I don’t have any agency? It’s really insulting. From some people I’ve had the reaction of “He’s just taking advantage of you. When is he going to settle down and commit to you”?
Brian: Or that it’s just something we would do until we settle down. Or I’ll just do it for a certain age and get it out of my system. For me this is a lifestyle and a long lifestyle.
