Today we celebrate the martyrdom of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Cosmas of Aetolia. Saint Cosmas was a monk on Mount Athos during the Turkish Occupation, and he burned with desire to preach the gospel among the people who had lost their zeal in Orthodoxy during the occupation. Receiving a blessing from his elder, Cosmas went through all of Greece and other parts of Asia Minor and Albania, preaching the gospel. Due to his great missionary work, the Turks loathed him and eventually had him publicly hanged. He is considered an ethnomartyr (one who dies for their country) and Equal to the Apostles for his great missionary work. Saint Cosmas also made many prophecies including the end of the occupation, the invention of airplanes, televisions and telephones.
