Eurovision 2020 Song Review: “Cleopatra” by Efendi (Azerbaijan)

Word has it this song was offered to Sammarinese contestant Senhit. I also await the day Azerbaijan sends an entry that’s partially or 100% in Azeri.

If there is one thing I hate about this entry it’s the rolled r. Maybe that has to do with the singer’s twist on the song (compared to this version). 

Also this song is just random, which does help it stand out. The Japanese chant seems out of place (doesn’t really fit much the Cleopatra theme). On the other hand there are multiple elements going on here. There’s the ethnopop element with the use of traditional instruments (as evidence in the beginning of the song and during the verses) and the drum and bass during the “Like Cleopatra” parts. So the track by itself without the lyrics gets an A+ from me.

As for the lyrics, it’s more of finding that inner strength after a loss, and using the story of Cleopatra’s love life as an example:

Betrayed by, A lover, So hard to, Recover, Couldn't see the forest for the trees, Just like me, Oh, in too deep There was no intervention, I was lost, falling out with myself, I was so filled with tension, Getting mad was my cry for help, Now I'm back with a vengeance, I've found my inner voice again, And it speaks to my soul loud and clear

There is one line in the song that caught my interest:

Cleopatra had Mark Antony You know who I mean, not the Latin king

The Latin king referred to is Marc Anthony. Totally different spelling, though it might sound the same to the untrained ear. Marc Anthony was at one point married to Jennifer Lopez.

Anyway, it’s a standout song, and would’ve done well on the stage (and I’d assume the trill would be toned down live) given the aesthetics of the music video.

🇹🇷 Turkey Tarkan - Yolla Release date: June 2017

So what exactly happened when’s there’s an upbeat dance song but it’s authentically Turkish? I can’t stop looping this song! The best part of this song? It’s 5 minutes long so I can get brainwashed longer and longer lol

Tarkan is one of the most popular Turkish singer in Turkey as well as aboard. He reached international fame back in the late 90’s with the song Kiss Kiss (perhaps the most iconic modern Turkish song in my opinion). 20 years later, oh hell yeah he still got it, and in my opinion, he’s even better.

This newest banger Yolla is recorded is his 2017 album. Released for less than a month, it has already accumulated 46 million + 18 million views over two different channels on YouTube. The song title literally translates to “send”, meaning to send him pain and he can handle it all. Oh, did I mention I can’t stop looping this song?

Sofi Marinova - Mili, mili [2018]. She has one super amazing tune here. Actually it’s a cover version of Amanat Ali Khan & Sunaj - Caje Caje (produced by Denorecords). Sofi definitely gives it an extra touch. The production is (like the original) quite restrained, which is nice. Still would love to hear a more dramatic mix as well.

if you were wondering, the thing w caitlyn was that she was in a multipl car crash bc she wasnt paying attention while driving, and she wasnt the first causing car in the accident, most of the details were reduced (not saying that texting n driving is ok) and what ive read directly from trans womens tweets they say that she is a bad spokesperson being rich/white and able to transition easily, has internalized transmosogyny and promotes transmisognist ideas to the public
