More demos again:
Rune Dice: I'd never heard of it when I hit the download button, but I did it anyway and hoped for the best. Turns out it's pretty fun. "Roguelike deckbuilder but the deck is dice that obey physics when you try to combo them together" is kind of a silly idea, but it works. Not sure how deep the full game goes, but the demo seemed promising.
Octopath Traveler 0: Oh my god I am so bored. Against my better judgment I tried it anyway because so many people had good things to say about it. I lasted maybe 20 minutes? Nothing had happened yet to make me care about the story or characters at all, and I don't like the style of voice acting they went with either ("could you try being a little cheesier, but without quite being campy?"). And possibly one of the hottest takes I've had on here, but I've always thought the Octopath games are kinda ugly. Like the pixel art is perfectly fine, but the bloom and blur just make it look so much worse to me. Anyway I assume it gets a lot more interesting later, but I'd prefer sooner.
Etrange Overlord: This one is a bit weird, because the gameplay is solidly mediocre at best (the combat is pretty mushy, and the camera kinda sucks), but everything else almost makes up for it. It's incredibly silly, and Étrange herself is so ridiculous it's hard not to like her. I could see myself overlooking the underwhelming combat sections for the sake of the rest of it if it's on sale cheap enough at some point. Also it turns out the reason I recognized the logos at the beginning is that Gemdrops did the Star Ocean 2 remake (which they did a great job with, and any problems it had were mostly inherited from the original version), and Broccoli made Jack Jeanne (which is incredible and one of my favorites from the past several years), which is an absolutely baffling combination.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: I don't know why I made the terrible decision to try this one after how frustrated I was by the first part. Ok actually I know exactly why: I really genuinely like how much better written and better developed the characters are, and I was curious what additional changes there would be to the story (even if I still don't love the way they told it). I completely unsurprisingly still don't actually like playing any of the modern actiony FF games as actual games (caveat: haven't tried 16, don't plan to, disliked all the rest), and that includes this. And it's another good example of how fancy AAA graphics with all the latest tech behind them (yes I know it's modified UE4 and not technically the latest latest) and huge amounts of detail make me like games less. My vision is wonky, and it's so much easier to process stuff if it's more stylized with less extraneous detail for detail's sake. That and I'm just not a huge fan of this art style to begin with. It's also continuing to fail to convince me HDR is a good idea, which also makes stuff harder for me to see. I should really stick to my "no Final Fantasy" policy because I should know by now it's not for me anymore (except maybe 14 and the occasional spinoff), but at least I didn't spend any money on it this time.
Clover Reset: Another one I knew basically nothing about but downloaded impulsively because it said "yuri" somewhere in the description. The translation actually seems pretty good, which can be hit or miss when grabbing VNs at random and not even checking who made them. I stopped pretty quickly because of the character animations though. When the chest of a girl who's not exactly breasting particularly boobily is wobbling like a sack of jello, that's my cue to leave. It might be perfectly fine otherwise, but if you felt the need to go out of your way to add that animation I'm immediately suspicious. I can tell you from personal experience they don't work that way, and more often than not when someone does that they have other questionable thoughts about women. Not guaranteed, but also not worth the effort checking to find out.
Card-en-Ciel: Haha nope. Not immediately after the previous one. The first character whose face I can see has spherical Orbs the size of her head bolted onto her chest. Look, I can get past that sometimes. I like the Xenoblade games, after all, and 2 in particular had Problems with its female character designs (although as characters most of them were better written than in the first one). You have to win me over and convince me there's a good reason for me to put up with it first, especially if something else has already made me grumpy ten minutes earlier. Slanted text boxes that make the dialogue harder to read do pretty much the opposite of that. All I wanted was a different flavor of deckbuilder for a change.
Rune Dice and Etrange Overlord are the clear winners for me this time around. I'm sure there are plenty of reasons to like the others too, but they weren't really doing it for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
