Sitting in the #EtruscanRoom @homehouselondon with @daniellismore one is cast back to #Regency London of the 1770's where next door at 22 Portman Square the illustrious salon of Lord Byron's friend Elizabeth Montagu whom he declared "Queen of The Blues" gathered the greatest #thinkers & #artists of the age. From the peacock-feather lined walls of her drawing room at 22 Joshua Reynolds & his remarkable relationship with the #Mayfair #Eccentric #angelicakauffman were the artistic darlings of Regency London after "Angel"as Reynolds referred to her, introduced #classic painting to England. Angel first burst onto the stage of #Mayfair #Salons having being brought to #Mayfair from Italy by Lady Elizabeth Wentworth like a sort of #grandtour souvenir ... however Angel's genius was quickly recognised & she was taken under the #royal wing of #QueenCharlotte. Angel became the main instigator in transforming #burlingtonhouse on #Piccadilly into the #royalacademy. By the time she departed london & returned to Rome she had painted over half the walls & ceilings of Mayfair. Sadly much of her work disappeared due to reconstruction & the war nevertheless her effect on London society. She is one of only two artists ever to receive a state funeral when she died in Rome.
