Thoughts. On Etsy and tax.
I often wonder. Do you know why Etsy collects the tax amount on your orders? Do you think they're doing us all a favour by helping to collect VAT and remitting it "for us"?
In Singapore, as far as I know, a company can only start charging a tax (Goods and Services Tax, or GST as we call it here) on their bill when they've earned their first S$1 million in a year.
Etsy being the big corporation they are have clearly earned their first million, MILLIONS in fact, and obviously more than that.
Whilst I, a small home business, clearly do not earn that kind of income, will probably never have in a year, or even in this lifetime. ⚰️ And so, I cannot, I. CANNOT. charge you tax when you buy from me DIRECTLY.
But because I'm using Etsy to "help me sell", they get to add their GST.
So if you can, please, shop directly with me, either via dm, email, my Cococart. Yes, Cococart is like shopify but they DO NOT charge me or you a fee!
I'm doing this crochet thing full time. You can guarantee I will respond (as long as I'm awake and hey it's 3.16am my time now and I'm STILL awake packing orders, aside from typing this post).
If you need some assurance, then good thing for Etsy, you can view my track record and reviews. You know I'm not some scam.
In fact, I'm trying to help you SAVE MONEY. My direct price is lower than what I put on Etsy. Much. Lower. Because that extra price is what goes to Etsy. Not me. I really only just get the balance after all their fee and tax deductions, and I pray I'm getting my correct amounts because GOD their finance table is hard to break down.
While it might be a little more troublesome to dm order, or follow the payment instructions on my Cococart, you know you'll be helping ME directly, to LIVE for the next day, the next month.
