Ettard for @blasting-zone !
Why do you think we as a fandom (myself included, mind you) find ourselves kind of intrigued and forgiving towards Pelleas? I mean, he certainly doesn’t make the best impression in his stories in the Vulgate (to put it mildly). Do you think it’s because of Nimue?
To be fair, I think it depends on what you read first! For example we know that Uther and Pellinore go through this process too, Elaine of Corbenic as well. They are characters that in some stories (even modern adaptations, ex. Pellinore in the Camelot musical) are harmless characters but in others (sometimes chronologically written before) they are clearly doing something very wrong by modern standards and storytelling.
For example, why are so many people forgiving of Nimue if in at least one story she enchants Pelleas and drives Ettard to suicide?
Pelleas: I love you.
Ettard: Your problem.
Pyle: Actually Pelleas was a good person, and the entire Ettard incident was cause of a magic necklace, it was entirely an accident, and both of them are valid in their feelings and actions and get a happy ending
Me, crying: I would kill for you
by W. H. Margetson from Legends of King Arthur and His Knights (1914), p. 129.
I couldn’t find any solo pictures of Ettard either, but I’m sure this picture can find some good use.
Text says: “Sir Pelleas, looking in, saw Sir Gawaine stoop and kiss the Lady Ettard.”
I can‘t get this idea out of my head of Pelleas resting at a lake after being rejected by Ettard and waking when Nimue comes out of the lake a night. Ettard is forgotten and he‘s so mesmerized by Nimue‘s beauty that, in his not completely awake state, he walks into the lake and almost drowns to get to her. Only Nimue‘s interference prevents him from going in far enough and she makes him think it was all a dream.
(ok the jokes on me because this has been in my inbox for forever and I only now figured out who Pelleas and Ettard are OP im so sorry)
