An Independence Day Prayer based on Psalm 98 and Luke 4:18 Lord: We sing to you a new song today, We pray a new prayer, We approach you with hearts renewed Our lives restored in Christ. For you have done marvelous things; Through Christ you have given us freedom. We are a people blessed beyond all deserving, Beyond all expectation! And, Lord, empowered by you we have brought That freedom to others. With our liberty and with You, Lord, We have proclaimed good news to the poor, Freedom for the prisoners, Recovery of sight for the blind, Set the oppressed free, Released the captives. You, Lord, have made Your salvation known And revealed Your righteousness to the nations. Protect and provide for the missions and people we Partner with. Give them freedom in You as you have us. But, Lord, like wayward children, We have not always used our liberty well. As a nation and as the church And as your people, we have Misused our freedom to grow comfortable And even to oppress. We have dropped your righteous hand And gripped the hand of power. And when not trusting in You, We have judged others, Other races and individuals, As unworthy. Forgive us these sins, O Lord. A Prayer Through the Day At sunrise, Lord, Grasp our hands And set our feet At a Godspeed pace On the path of love and justice. When people think of paradox, they often think of contradiction and confusion. Good Friday is that kind of paradox. How can Jesus being tortured and murdered be good? On his way to the cross Jesus told the women caring for him, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves” Jesus calls us to lament—not for him—but for the kind of world we must live in that would include the kind of violence we saw in Boulder last week and the kind of world that would take the life of such a one as Jesus. For Holy Week I wrote a trilogy of poems capturing the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus from three women's perspectives who knew and loved Jesus.
