One thing my father used to tell me is that there's trying to win the game everyone else is playing and there's trying to win the game that you're playing, the secret version with rules known only to you, and if you stick to that second thing you'll be a lot happier. This is relatively decent and broadly applicable advice for not generally going crazy while Living In A Society, but I do have to imagine that in whatever circumstances under which he formulated that maxim he was probably being the most annoying goddamn sonofabitch in the building.
