Which is how we found ourselves recently facing a pretty large bill for our 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV, after its AC system started to feel a little unwell. Here's what happened next.
P.S. Note! A small clarification is needed here: AC unit repair will be an expensive "pleasure" also in an ICE vehicle. I just recently spent 640 euros on leaking AC radiator replacement, and that's in Latvia, where labour costs are much cheaper than in the US.
Using an analogue spare part. If I had agreed to put on the original spare part with a GM brand mark, then the "joy" of the repair would be - 1000 euros. In this "Bolt case" AC compressor replacement plus American labour costs and etc. The bill just shy of 3000 USD is almost a normal price, nothing extraordinary or out of line with today's ICE vehicle repair cost trends!
I have noticed a trend that more and more ICE vehicle owners are avoiding or postponing their "luxury" and top trim level ICE vehicle repairs and regular "luxury" maintenance in Europe. Perhaps something similar is happening in the US.
The rich often change their cars even before the warranty expires and they don't care much about the longevity of these cars, so when a common man bought his "cheap" used luxury dream car, then the "fun" of repairs began...! The more complex and more "premium" the car is, the more exclusive the "pleasure" of car repair...!
People have forgotten the simple truth that all engineers know, the simpler the mechanism the more reliable it is...
Today, forget about cheap car repairs: SIMPLE CARS are dead...! Consumers and manufacturers have slaughtered them! Such a thing as CHEAP and AFFORDABLE AUTOMOBILE REPAIR DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE!!! FORGET about it altogether!
