Guess what I’m watching now it’s out on netflix?
That is definitely how I’d react if someone told me to get in a giant robot. Especially if it was clear I was going to get no training whatsoever and just be shoved into battle straight away.

I just started episode 14. I stopped commenting because I didn’t have much to say and was enjoying just watching it.
It’s... interesting how much it’s not what I was expecting? Most of what I’ve heard is about the ending, so I can only assume it goes wildly awry. For now it’s a good, fun show about giant robots. The characters are mostly likeable (Kaji is not), the technobabble works, the tension is tense. There are hints something is wrong... NERV and other agencies seem to be sabotaging each other despite all fighting the angels, the behaviour of the EVAs is not always robotic, Genji is up to something, Asuka comes off as running from something worse than piloting an EVA when she’s so gung-ho about it. But Shinji seems to be getting on well with his fellow pilots and to be facing battle with less trauma than previously. Asuka’s calmed down a bit. Even Rei is... if not opening up, at least getting acceptance from her fellow pilots.
Did people watching this when it first came out, without the spoilers for it getting Deep and Weird just think of it as a good robot show? Because it is good.
Eva ending
That was weird.
Less depressing than I’d been led to believe (I guess End of Evangelion is the one where the world ends then?) but very weird.
It seems like we just abandoned all the questions that had been raised about who was plotting human instrumentality and why, the difference between Adam and Lilith, what it meant to be human, what the angels themselves wanted, and... the angels gave Shinji a therapy session instead. A good therapy session and Shinji’s breakthrough into deciding he maybe does have the right to exist is actually uplifting and (imo) true to experiencing depression and trying to move past it.
But what happened to the plot?
Also, they really did run out of budget, didn’t they?
I suppose I’ll catch up on the actual plot in End of Evangelion?
Eva ep 6
Aaaah, that one got to me! I think it’s the first time I’ve had a strong emotional reaction to this series.
I was holding my breath during the second shot at the angel.
Dr Ikari’s preference for Rei and Shinji’s confused jealousy combined with a desire to connect to her was interesting, and Shinji’s final scene with her where he’s so concerned for her was really touching.
I’m starting to see why the fandom sometimes gets fed up of Shinji? I’m still mostly sympathising with him, but it’s not that he doesn’t want to pilot the giant robot (which I fully sympathise with!) it’s that he wants to be constantly talked into it. He says he won’t do it, but if people actually give him the option not to he doesn’t want that at all.
I was expecting to relate to Rei more than I do, actually. She seems like the sort of person an autistic person would relate to? But so far I don’t get her, although I am intrigued and worried about her.

Give your precious eva pilot some household help, jeez!
All my reactions are yelling at NERV. But seriously, is someone at least making sure Rei eats? Leaving her alone in a shabby apartment when she’s injured... I guess I could see her not liking to have people around, but still.
Eva Ep 4
I feel like I shouldn’t think staying is a really bad decision. Or maybe I should. I understand someone as isolated as Shinji not wanting to lose people who actually care about him, but he can make new friends somewhere the price of that isn’t constant trauma!
Evangelion ep 2
I was genuinely surprised to learn in retrospect that Shinji actually beat the angel. I thought he’d fallen over and got his EVA ripped apart, and that would serve NERV right for not training him.
I like the cosmic horror nature of the EVA. Vaguely remembered spoilers tell me it might be Shinji’s mum? Currently it’s just very creepy and one hell of an aesthetic.
