One of the most haunting things about PMH I felt was that Grace didn't even have the choice, and if he did, he would have chosen to die on Earth. To him, it wasn't a movie, there wasn't a happy ending waiting. There was almost certain death.
He loved Earth, and he tried to help save it when he had the choice. But it wasn't enough that he loved the world, and he was sent to space, a man no one would miss but all would hail as a hero. The scenes where he was in the room with images of Earth and nature, he was so happy. He loved Earth, and nature, and wanted to spend his final years there.
He didn't even get to choose who he was brave for.
