A well-known anti-vaxxer Bishop of the Greek Orthodox Church was infected with Covid-19. It needed a prosecutor’s order to be transferred from his home to the public hospital. Until the very last moment, the 80-year-old Bishop and but also his relatives were opposing his intubation which doctor considered as essential. At the end, the Bishop ended in an ICU bed in the biggest hospital in Athens Evangelismos.

Construction for Line 4 of the Athens metro is being hampered by citizens’ reactions at the Evangelismos station and the location of the future Exarchia station, with the Attiko Metro company planning information campaigns.

Civilians are opposed to the felling of trees in Rizari Park next to Evangelismos to make way for the construction site. In response, the company is mulling alternative plans to restrict the construction site to the “absolutely necessary” area, so fewer trees are cut down. In Exarchia, locals have been preventing crews from initiating work in the central square.

President Sakellaropoulou's Coffee Outing as Greece Reopens After Six Months

The President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, enjoyed her first outdoor coffee outing in six months, as restaurants, bars and cafes reopened on Monday.

Sakellaropoulou is seen in the company of Greek doctors from the Athenian hospitals of Evangelismos and Sotiria.

“First day with the restaurants opening again, albeit with restrictions. Enjoying a coffee and a friendly conversation with doctors from Evangelismos and Sotiria; we relive small joys of everyday life, which we considered self-evident until they were deprived by the pandemic,” she wrote on Twitter.

Belgian embassy delivers waffles, chocolates to Athens hospital staff

The Embassy of Belgium in Athens delivered 2,000 waffles and 10 kilos of chocolate bites to staff at the Evangelismos Hospital on Wednesday, as a token of appreciation for their efforts in fighting Covid-19, the embassy announced.

“This is only a symbolic gesture, to convey our respect and gratefulness to the healthcare workers,” Belgian Ambassador to Greece, Françoise Gustin, said.

“At the eve of the celebration of the bicentenary, it seemed to us the right occasion, the healthcare workers are now fighting for people’s lives,” she added, refering to Greece’s 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution on March 25.

She also noted that the date coincides with the 140th anniversary of the laying of foundation stone that led to Evangelismos becoming “a real healthcare reference centre.”

Archbishop of All Greece Ieronymos Hospitalized with Covid-19

Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos was hospitalized on Thursday morning after testing positive for the coronavirus.

The 82-year-old head of the Greek Church, who is believed to be suffering from only mild symptoms at present, is receiving treatment at Evangelismos hospital in central Athens. He was diagnosed as positive for the coronavirus on Monday.

“I personally participate as a shepherd in the ordeal that affects thousands of our brothers in our country and millions throughout the universe. I share the agony, pain and fear of all, but with our Faith in God we will all overcome,” the Archbishop stressed to his close associates shortly before he was hospitalized.

He also emphasized the sacred obligation of all to respect the rules and measures of health authorities to “protect the supreme value of human health and life.”
