Turkey Slams Head of Greek Church for "Insulting Islam"

Turkey slammed Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Ieronymos, for his remarks during a television interview on Sunday about Islam.

“These provocative expressions of Archbishop Ieronimos, which incite the society to hostility and violence against Islam, also show the frightening level Islamophobia has reached,” reads a statement by the Turkish foreign ministry.

“Such malign ideas are also responsible for the increase of racism, Islamophobia and xenophobia in Europe,” it adds.

Ankara was responding to Ieronymos interview on Open TV where he appeared to claim that Islam is not a religion, but a political party seeking war.

“Islam, its people, is not a religion but a political party and are the people of war…They are the people who seek expansion, that is the characteristic of Islam,” Ieronymos said.

Archbishop Ieronymos discharged, urges people to respect protection rules

Archbishopof Athens and whole Greece Ieronymos was discharged from Evangelismos Hospital in Athens on Monday, where he had been undergoing treatment for Covid-19 for the last eleven days.

The first thing the 82-year-old Archbishop did upon returning to his home in the Diocese was to light a candle and  bow to the icon of Virgin Mary.

“I do not want to hide from you that during my own ordeal I was very scared and in a lot of pain, like all people. Passing the door of Evangelismos Hospital, I was prepared for everything,” he said in a message after leaving the hospital.

He urged everyone to follow the rules of protection.

“I warmly ask you all once again: respect the rules and measures of the competent health authorities. Limit yourselves, discipline yourselves and protect, with your attitude and behavior, the health and life of yourself and your loved ones and all our fellow human beings,” he stressed.

Archbishop Ieronymos was hospitalized after contracting Covid-19 and developed moderate fever. He was in a special isolation ward in Evangelismos hospital. His condition was stable all the time

Archbishop of All Greece Ieronymos Hospitalized with Covid-19

Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos was hospitalized on Thursday morning after testing positive for the coronavirus.

The 82-year-old head of the Greek Church, who is believed to be suffering from only mild symptoms at present, is receiving treatment at Evangelismos hospital in central Athens. He was diagnosed as positive for the coronavirus on Monday.

“I personally participate as a shepherd in the ordeal that affects thousands of our brothers in our country and millions throughout the universe. I share the agony, pain and fear of all, but with our Faith in God we will all overcome,” the Archbishop stressed to his close associates shortly before he was hospitalized.

He also emphasized the sacred obligation of all to respect the rules and measures of health authorities to “protect the supreme value of human health and life.”
