Evasiveness was a mistake.

“You know you can tell me anything right? I know I don’t get it, you don’t have to say it. But I can try. I’ll still listen, even if I can’t help.”

Charlie’s voice was low with worry, playing with their left earring and looking just to the side of Finn’s face.

Finn gave them a carefully blank look, matching Charlie’s almost-eye-contact. He shrugged, leaning back into the couch in a way that made it clear to Charlie he was pretending not to shrink away from the question.  

“There’s nothing to tell. I’m fine now. Tristan’s dead. There’s no more to it.”

He ignored Charlie’s incredulous look.

“I’m fine! He’s dead! I’m not! I spent three years thinking I would die long before him and I was wrong. So I’m fine.” A split-second smile.

“Umm, I don’t think that’s how it works, Finn.”

“Does it matter? You don’t need to worry about him finding us. We can move on. Get another plant, or something.”

Charlie opened their mouth to object, but –

“I think boots needs feeding. He’s been meowing for hours.”

Boots had, in fact, been doing nothing of the sort.

“I’ll go find the biscuits. Hey, have you seen my guitar? I bet I’m out of practice.”

Finn slid past Charlie in the direction of the kitchen, the barest brush of hands on the way past. He meandered past the kitchen, past the cat biscuits, into his room.

Charlie had left the guitar for him in the closet, but no music floated from the room. Just empty silence. And a growing distance they didn’t know how to bridge.
