It’s Fact Friday! This late night fact is brought to you by 🦊. [ TW: this one has to do with a famous suicide ] On May 1st, 1947, a woman named Evelyn McHale, from Baldwin, NY, jumped from 86th floor of the Empire State Building, in NYC. The day before her suicide, she visited her fiancé, Barry Rhodes, in Easton, PA. While there they discussed their upcoming wedding in June. He didn’t notice anything was wrong when she departed the next morning. After leaving Rhodes’ house, she took the train back to Manhattan. At the Empire State Building, she went up to the 86th floor observation deck. She set her bag down, removed her coat and neatly hung it over the railing next to her. Then she jumped. She landed 1,050 ft below on top of a parked car. Police found her coat and bag on the observation deck among her things, they found a makeup case, family pictures, and a suicide note. In the note, she wrote about how she wouldn’t be a good wife for Rhodes and he’d be better off without her. She also stated that she didn’t want anyone to see her body, she didn’t want a ceremony or a burial. She just wanted to be cremated. Her family complied. However, 4 minutes after her fall, Robert Wiles, a photography student, took a photo of her body. The picture is now famous and has since been dubbed “The Most Beautiful Suicide.” Evelyn was the 5th person over a 3 week period to attempt/commit suicide from the observation deck. A higher guardrail has since been built to deter people from jumping and security guards are now trained to be on the look-out. 👻 Visitors to the 86th floor deck have reported seeing a woman in 40’s attire jump from the deck, going right through the barrier. Women in the bathrooms have also claimed to see an apparition of a woman checking her makeup in the mirror. Some have even claimed to have followed her to the observation deck, and see her jump, reliving the moments before her death. Even if the claims aren’t true this entire story is chilling.
