It really bothers me when other role players find out someone’s age and tell them that they are ‘too old’ to be role playing/writing fanfiction. Are you kidding me?
If you really think about it, most people who role play/ write fanfiction now a days are 25 - 30, because online role playing/ writing fanfiction didn’t start until the late nineties. I am proud to say that I am a part of the first generation of online role players and fanfiction writers!
For a lot of people, role playing is their hobby that they enjoy doing, just like those who play sports or paint or whatever. A lot of people stick with a hobby for their entire life. Why should role playing be any different? I started role playing when I was 9 and I’m 28 now. Sure, I have a job, play in two bands and am married, but that doesn’t stop me from role playing or writing fanficiton.
Role playing and writing fanfiction are somethings I enjoy and, just because I am older than some other writers out there, doesn’t mean that I should stop. I love role playing and I can see it being something that I am going to be doing for a very long time to come - when I’m 30, 40, maybe even 50. People are forgetting just how young the internet is, my generation is the first generation who is privileged enough to have this sort of technology. There is really no telling what the age cap is for writing fanfiction and I honestly don’t think there is going to be one!
