Advent - Day 4

The act of fasting today is going quite well, but I have been convicted lately that I am not fulfilling the original intention of Submonk - that is, a father leading his family into a deeper relationship with God via the monastic elements: Rhythm, Simplicity, Humility, and Order. I've mostly focused this season of Advent on my own spiritual state, and even that not so well (especially with regard to my morning office...).

On days when I work and fast, the Fast fits in well with the Rhythm of the day - until I get home. These evenings I have yet to celebrate Advent with the whole family, and simply disregard it. I would like to change that - and my son is getting old enough to start participating in a more directed Evening Office.

Lord, Christmas is a season of giving, we give each-other presents because we are celebrating and reflecting on your gift. Help me to be a good father, like you, and give my family what they need this season of Advent. Please help me connect with you better.

Sunday - Evening Office

Evening office is an area that will continue to evolve as the little one (and hopefully more than one in the near future) grows.  The morning office is much more scheduled and because I usually get up before anyone else, it is very easy to keep it that way.

The evening office is almost the opposite, loose and flexible, and my posture as a husband and father {should be} focused around the needs my wife and my 14 month old.  The time is scheduled around actives more than hours, but is still rhythmic.  On work days, I get home around 5 ish, and the evening usually follows this pattern:

5ish - arrive home from work, greet my wife

Before dinner - take care of the 14 month old, help with dinner prep as needed

During dinner - try to get all members of the family fed (including my wife, my son, and myself)

Bath the Kiddo / Do the dishes - my wife and I trade off on this one

Evening office - ie: do an abbreviated bible study with the kiddo - this is usually either myself or my wife, and sometimes both of us.  Right now, Kiddo goes to bed right away after this.

Post Kid Nighttime - Either together time for my wife and I, or alone time / project time / personal time.

The evening office is short now because my son is so young, but I am looking forward to it being more of a family event as he gets older.  We will move it later as bedtime needs become less pressing, and that will allow the family some time to relax after dinner to do projects or just have some down time.

In the same vein, together time with my wife is invaluable with a little one (eventually little ones, we hope) in the house, and so the time spend later in the evening usually revolves around us hanging out and building each other up, or taking alone time and building ourselves up.  Though the kiddo's needs are more pressing than my wife's needs, my primary vocational responsibility is as a husband first, and a father second {and monk third}.  While I draw wisdom from the monastic vocation, I am not in a position to emulate all aspects of it. 1 Cor 7:32-34.
