Hi guys love the podcast so much and I have an idea for a potential episode if I feel like you guys could have an excellent discussion/analysis about:
On February 10 2021 a vanity fair article was released titled, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer Star Charisma Carpenter Speaks Out About Joss Whedon” which detailed the work place and personal harassment charisma experienced at the hands of joss whedon. The allegations came out in response to previous allegations made by ray fisher who, on the set of justic league, experienced similar toxic workplace experience at the hands of whedon.
I think this was a turning point in fandom in which a wide-spread realisation among so many fans made them realise that sometimes our self-described allies aren’t actually supporting us. As joss whedon claimed to be a feminist and his ex wife even came out and said he doesn’t practise what he preaches. Y’all could talk about ideas like how do fans reclaim work and how far can a work be supported without feeling like you’re supporting the problematic creator. While also how powerful people weaponise progressive language and causes to make them appear more appealing to fans while also being hypocritical in their support of such causes.
I also think this would be a good topic for you to explore because it immediately tainted the beloved buffy fandom and made fans realise that they needed to be more self-critical of the work which is never easy to do. While on the other hand it tainted the works of the mcu and called into questions things like the portrayal of Natasha, the ignoring of his peers other stories (winter soldier) and more.
Anyway love the pod and would love to hear your opinions on this idea:)
I (Emily) KNEW THIS HAD BEEN A RECOMMENDED TOPIC!
Thank you for sending this in, I apologize for not crediting your idea when I did my episode last week.
If you haven't listened yet, please check it out! We'd love to hear from you!
