burn the sea by mona tewari is a standalone adult fantasy novel that takes inspiration from the portuguese attacks on south india in the 1500s, based on the story of the real queen abbakka chowta.
i really, really enjoyed it. i loved concept of turning colonizers into these half-men half-snake creatures that attack with presumed impunity, and i loved how firm tewari's abbakka chowta stood for her values and her home. i thought themes of grief, power, and resistance were explored very well. i also liked what the narrative did with complicity a lot – the characters were not all wholly perfect individuals with perfect politics that opposed the invasion into their homeland, some of them were spineless, and cowardly, and unwilling to meet the moment. it was a very interesting and refreshing take on a story like this, definitely worth the read.
