“You could help, you know?”
“Please, this couch wouldn’t be moving if it weren’t for me.”

“Fifteen. My f—friend did it.”
“Which one is it?” He asked. Ev held up her arm to expose the tiny star under her arm, hidden behind all the other pieces that made up her sleeve. It was as if she could feel it being done once more, the touch of familiar hands on her skin, the face so real and life like she could have sworn she was in front of her again. But Marcus shifted, and suddenly everything was lost once more. Her voice was strained as she spoke.
“She gave me a few more after that. She…always said I would look good covered in tattoos.” Marcus smiled, nodding in agreement.
“She was definitely right.” The mood shifted, as Everlie cleared her throat, a high pitched ringing filled her ears. She focused on outlining the ink of Marcus’ chest, but when she got over towards the tally marks, his entire body tensed, enough to shift her off of him slightly. Where he had been was suddenly cold, goosebumps forming on her arms.
Trying not to think too much of it, Everlie looked down at his uncovered legs, where he mentioned his first, hidden away behind a large thigh to ankle piece that took her breath away. Only her eyes drifted over towards the other leg where a piece made of nothing but words stood out, a flower under it and a name. He was no less tense than before, but when she looked up at him, he didn’t seem mad or emotionless as she suspected. Plainly, she could see the pain in his eyes as he looked down at the piece she had been staring at, and then back at her.
“Who’s Marisole?”
Smile long gone, his eyes bore into her.
“Old lover?” She was only half joking. Marcus laughs, but it’s without humor.
“No. My sister.”
“I didn’t know you had a sister.” She says, scooting closer to where she had been. He lets her, or doesn’t notice one, mind somewhere else.
“I have two. Had…Marisole and Estella, my half-sister.” A twinge comes from the side of his mouth as he tries to smile, to hide the expression that has formed on his face, that of sucking on a lemon.
“You don’t have to talk about it.” He smiles, genuinely, down at her.
“I don’t mind. I’ve only seen Stella a couple of times in my life. Marisole, however, died a long time ago.”
Unsure of what else to say, she blurted out the first thing that felt right, and yet it didn’t, “I’m sorry.” He shrugs, his hand back on the curvature of her back, his thumb tracing along the outline of her shorts.
“Like I said. It was a long time ago. It was better off that way.” It was then that the conversation came to an end. He disappeared before her into his own head, probably thinking back to his sisters. She understood. Thinking of her own family made her want to disappear. It was just…looking at him now, mimicking the same expression, the same feeling she had had more times than she could count, it seemed as though they may have more in common than she originally thought. There was a lot more to Marcus than she gave him credit for. Everlie bit at her bottom lip, moving up till she was straddling his hips, hands on his chest, trailing down his stomach.
“What makes you think you can trust me to tattoo you? I could draw a big dick on your back, and you’d never know.” His laugh surprised her, the same laugh she heard only in rarity. It made her own smile become more genuine, until she was laughing alongside him. His hands were now on her waist, moving her slightly towards him, slowly, agonizing.
The mood had shifted back. It wasn’t the same, but he seemed better. Happier. Which in return, made something spark inside Everlie’s chest. Something new and different. However familiar. And it scared the shit out of her.

A howl came from outside the building, along with the shaking of the window panes and the creaking of old metal that haunted the silent room. Shadows danced along the walls and in the corners like lurking monsters. The sun was fast asleep, the moon and stars hidden behind thick storm clouds. Besides the streetlights, along the roads, it was pitch black outside, unusual for the city. It was normally alive with people and party goers, but tonight and the signal of another spring storm kept people inside their homes, and out off the streets. The lamp that sat beside the bed cast an orangish glow over the bed like a nasty tangerine sunset, but it gave just enough light to keep sleep away.
Marcus stretched out his hand behind his head, his other fast asleep under the weight of Everlie. Despite the tingling in his arm, he didn’t move her, hoping to let her sleep a little longer. His eyes traveled along the side of her face, half covered by her hair, sprawled out over her eyes. Behind closed eyelids, they darted to the left and back again, her mouth opening slightly to form an inaudible plea. Marcus’ brows came together as he watched her, shaking slightly in his arms. Pulling her tighter against him, he brushed her hair away to get a better look, as if it were enough to see where her dream was taking her.
As he watched silently, Everlie’s eyes opened, unsure at first, but quickly upon seeing Marcus so close. Her first instincts were to push him away, burning hot red at the idea that they were in her bed cuddling. But as she looked up into his tired eyes, sloppy smile on his hooded face, she felt her body relax back into his. Her heart as calm as ever.
“I didn’t mean to wake you,” he whispered, not wanting to break the spell that had been cast over them. Everlie’s voice was hoarse with sleep as she spoke.
“You didn’t. I wasn’t asleep. ‘Just thinking…” Marcus’ smile didn’t falter. Everlie tried to sit up in bed, but he still had his hands firmly placed around her, keeping her by his side. “What are you doing?” She asked, noting the hint of a laugh in her voice. Marcus noticed it to, deciding to add to it, leaning down to place a soft kiss on her naked shoulder. Her breathing hitched as his lips touched her skin, his eyes never leaving her. “Stop that.” She whispered, wanting to bite back her tongue. “No affection.” Marcus nodded, falling back against the headboard, only, he pulled her along with him, till Everlie was laying against his chest again, their faces inches apart. She took in a deep breath, a battle in her mind. “You’re too much sometimes,” She laughed, looking up at the ceiling, a loud crash of thunder shaking the walls.

Marcus was already standing over her, his face pulled back in complete shock. “Everlie, I swear to God, I had no idea. He never told me anything about that.” Just by his tone, she knew he was telling the truth. It should have been a comforting thought, but it wasn’t. It made her feel even more uneasy. Apparently, Toby’s relationship with Angel wasn’t exactly what she thought it was. Still, he looked like he was going to pass out or punch someone all at the same time, pacing back and forth. His hands were fists, white at the knuckles. His face had gone red, and he was breathing louder than the music played. She’d never seen him this upset, and it made it even harder to swallow the lump in her throat.
“I didn’t…I said no. If you were wondering...” He stopped in his tracks, looking back over at her. “It may not seem like it sometimes. But I’m not that kind of girl. I want my shop…more than you could realize. But not at that cost.” She waited a second, calming her shaking hands. “I quit. I told him to go fuck himself and walked out. Now, I guess…I just start over.” She sighed, leaning back against the wall, her head lopped over to the side to keep eye contact with Marcus. He seemed calmer now, eyes dark and hooded. They were closer too. She could smell his cologne, feel his body heat, she could feel his body on hers….
Marcus closed his eyes, leaning back against the wall, a deep groan coming from his throat. “Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck….Probably shouldn’t have said that.” There was something about him that made her mouth go dry.
“Why? Marcus...” It almost looked as if he was holding his breath.
“It’s no secret...Tobias doesn’t like anyone to challenge him. He likes to hold all the cards...by you basically showing him up...he’s not going to forget that easily, Ev...he’s going to keep you in his sights for a while.” Everlie’s head spun, seeing two of the man in front of him. Somehow she managed to stay planted on two feet. “Don’t worry, okay? He’s not going to do shit to you, do you hear me? I promise, it’s going to be okay.” Everlie nodded, feeling as though a weight had planted itself firmly on her shoulders. Had he not been there, had the wall not been there, she would have probably collapsed on the floor.
Marcus was closer now, his chest brushing up against hers as he breathed. “Why didn’t you just come to me in the first place?” Everlie blinked up at him. He seemed to be thinking something over in his head, almost like a light bulb going off as he started to smile. “Seriously, why don’t I give it to you?” Ev stood straight and back away from Marcus till they were no longer touching.
“What? No. No! It’s not your problem, Marcus. I’m not taking your money.” A simple laugh came from him as he stepped closer to her, his smile splitting his face.
“Technically you wouldn’t be taking it, if I just gave it to you, you’d be accepting it. There’s a difference. Besides, I’m a business man. I like business. A tattoo parlor you said… I want to invest in your business.” She was shaking her head again, stepping back once more, but a stack of cases blocked her path. Marcus was beside her again quickly enough.
“No. I won’t let you do that for me. No.”
“It’s not for you. Like I said, I’m a businessman. I’m doing it as an investment.” Her mouth had gone dry as she stared up at the tall man with a childish smile, a man she had only known for a couple of months, offering to do something for her that seemed impossible, crazy…absolutely ridiculous.
“I….I don’t know what to say—” She mumbled, brushing a hand through her hair.
Marcus was close again, so close their faces were inches a part.
“Say, thank you Marcus. I accept your very kind offer. You’re really awesome. And very sexy. And you have an enormous pen-” Covering her mouth with her hand, Ev let out a chuckle, bewildered that this was happening. Marcus smiled down at her, taking her hand in his again. He spoke soft and only to her. “Seriously, princess. Let me do this. For the investment, not for you, of course. If it makes you feel better you can repay me. Give me…I don’t know, five percent of the earning, and whatever else will make you take it. I want to do this.” Everlie was on the balls of her feet so she could inch up closer to him, her hand on his chest, eyes wide, smile slipping through her mask.
“Fifteen percent of the earnings, and I will pay you back. This isn’t a handout.” She whispered, nodding her head.
“It’s a deal then partner. But I do have a couple of requests.” Ev’s body went cold as she looked up into Marcus’ eyes. He was still smiling, but something serious took over his face. “Promise me, you’ll stay away from the club. Stay away from Tobias.”
“Stay away from the crazy fucker who tried to make me a prostitute, yeah no problems there.” She rolled her eyes, but simply agreed. “What’s your second request?”
Now Marcus was smiling, his large boyish smile that did something to her every time she saw it. “I want to be the first person you ink in your shop. The very first.” Everlie couldn’t hold it back any longer. She forgot about everything she had trained herself against for so long, walls coming down around her. She slipped her hands around his neck, pulling him in towards her small body. It seemed as though he didn’t know what do to, stunned by her sudden affection, but when his arms closed in on her waist and his face came close to hers, Everlie’s smile widened.
“I think I might be able to swing that one. Seriously, I don’t know how to thank you, Marcus…Thank you. Thank you so much.” She whispered, her mouth at the base of his neck. She felt him smiling into her hair.
“You’re welcome, princess.”
