Can I know something about evermore fem!jily ? I’m obsessed with them at this point 🤪😅
hi there love!
I’m writing this fic for @women-inthe-sequel who I love dearly. We chat a lot about the wlw potential of Taylor Swift songs. The Evermore Album is just full of brilliant songs and loads have wlw vibes. I listened to this album for weeks until I finally got the idea for it. Without being to spoilery, here is the general idea.
Muggle AU established relationship fem!jily. It’s in Lily’s POV and its a tad angsty, with a lil bit of hurt and comfort thrown in. I’ve been working on it since February, and I am SO picky about how I want it done. I posted an earlier snippet of it, but I am feeling lazy and can’t find it at the moment. BUT I am very very excited about it :’)

Suddenly all too aware of how quiet the house was made you uncomfortable. Taking a deep breath, you slowly made your way down the hall to the living room as your heart was pounding in your chest. The thought of being face to face with a sobered Eddie made you a little unnerved.
You subconsciously started to wring your hands together but willed yourself to stop the closer you got to him, opting to attempt smooth out the wrinkles on your pajama top and finally letting your hands fall to your sides.
You could easily tell him to get his shit and get out. That could be the end of it. But something else gnawed at you.
There was something in the way he looked at you the night before. The way his eyes shined for you and for just a moment you could still imagine no time at all had passed. You could picture yourselves still above the Hideout in your little apartment and taking care of Eddie after he had indulged a little too hard after a small gig. It was the way he used to look at you as if you were his entire world.
He had tried to kiss you and you almost let it happen. Your heart ached at the thought. Would you really let someone you claimed to hate so much get that close to you? You had let your guard down; let the façade you held so tightly falter.
You padded softly, approaching him from behind, slowly examining his tall and lean frame. He had his hands in his back pockets peacefully staring at your photos.
He had heard you enter, but he was nervous. He knew a conversation was far overdue and wasn’t sure which way this was going to go.
He tried to ignore your gaze which he could feel on him the moment you had entered, letting you take the lead, but the longer the silence stretched the more anxious he got. It was only a few seconds but seemed like an eternity.
“I can hear you thinking from here.” He finally spoke, smirk adorning his face as he turned to you. “You always did like to overthink.”
You were civil to each other the night before because you took pity on him but now, could you still look him in the eye and remain levelheaded?
“I… Uh…” you began, struggling to find your words as he gave his undivided attention, eyes zeroing in on you.
“Do you want some coffee?” You finally blurted out. Shifting a little from side to side.
He released a small breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding and grinned wider as he spoke, “would love some.”
“And I would also love some Advil.” As he followed behind, rubbing his temples.
You laughed out then, a bright, genuine sound. “I’m sure you would Munson.”
You grabbed a mug from the cabinet and poured him a steaming cup.
“Sit,” you ushered him to a stool at the counter. As you settled on the other side, to keep some space between the two of you, setting the mug before him.
You watched him intently as he perched himself on the seat. He looked a little rough, you could tell he was feeling less than stellar. The bags under his eyes were a little darker than the day before.
Taking a hair tie from his wrist, you watched his deft fingers pull his hair up into a messy bun. His shirt pulled taut against his chest and biceps as he worked. God, why did he have to look so good doing it? And why the hell were you thinking of him like that?
He finished and took a sip from his mug, eyeing you above the rim, quirking an eyebrow as if he knew what you had been thinking.
Your cheeks heated momentarily before you remembered the Advil turning away, and shuffling to the cabinet where you kept it. Taking the bottle and shaking a few of the pills out into your hand.
“What did you say to Steve?” you finally asked, pulling yourself together, turning to hand him the pills. He held out his palm, as you dropped them, avoiding any direct graze of his skin with your fingers.
“Um yeah… that. I uh…” he was trying to choose his words carefully. Taking a moment to pop the Advil washing it down with his coffee.
“He pissed me off, so I asked if he just knocked you up and decided not to pursue a relationship when it didn’t work out how he wanted.”
He looked toward the floor, feeling ashamed under your scrutinizing gaze, each word coming out in a flurry, each one a little quieter than the last.
“What the fuck Eddie?” You could practically feel the steam coming out of your ears.
“Look,” he pinched his nose, trying to put his pounding headache aside. “He started it, so I shot back. I know I don’t know the whole story, but I do know he doesn’t live here so something must have happened.”
“The whole story? You don’t know any of the story. You have no right to even make those assumptions! You have no idea what any of us have been through, especially Maddie and Steve! God you are such an asshole!”
“Well, why don’t you fuckin’ enlighten me then, Peach. I’m just dying to know all about you and King Steve.” He scoffed.
“Get your head out of your ass for starters. Maddie isn’t mine. And I don’t feel like it’s my place to tell you anything concerning her.”
His face fell. Confusion flashed as the words seemed to settle over him.
“Oh.” He finally said. “Well, how the hell was I supposed to know that? You didn’t correct me.”
“No, Eddie, you’re completely right. I should have thought to tell you when you showed up on my doorstep out of the blue. Or when you were so drunk you wouldn’t be able to remember. Why didn’t I think of that?”
Yeah, he deserved that. He hadn’t made the smartest decisions the past couple of days. So, Maddie wasn’t yours. It sent his head spinning for an entirely different reason. You and Steve weren’t together.
You turned to leave him there. Instead, he quickly hopped up from the stool taking just a few strides to cut you off from exiting the room.
“Move, Eddie.” He was met with fury in your eyes.
“Look, Peach, I know I am the world’s biggest fuck up. Could you at least hear me out?” When you didn’t immediately reply, he let out a small “Please. I don’t want to argue.”
“Hear you out, this shit again? When are you going to realize I don’t want to hear you out? There is nothing you could say that would make me forgive you.”
You felt the familiar sting in your eyes as fresh tears began to build. Thinking back to that night and how the following week he completely ignored your persistent calls. Any kind of explanation now would never satiate the years of resentment built within you.
He was stunned into silence but knew exactly what you were referring to. He searched your face, but it gave no inclination of backing down anytime soon.
“I’m going upstairs to get dressed and then I’m taking you back to your car so you can go back to LA or wherever the hell you call home these days.” You shoved past him. “Where you should have just stayed.”
He deflated with those words and watched you ascend the stairs. He pinched the bridge of his nose and breathed out slowly through his mouth. He knew he wasn’t getting anywhere with you. With each passing moment he felt like his chance at redemption was slowly fading. He did nothing to appease you, only making things worse.
Once you made it behind the safety of your bedroom door. You leaned against it, letting those unshed tears flow freely.
You were currently regretting last night’s decision to bring him here knowing exactly what the morning would bring. Somewhere deep down you thought maybe he would just slip out while you were sleeping and blissfully unaware.
You were so caught up in your own head, you hadn’t heard the footfalls on the steps leading to the second floor nor heard when they were just outside the door.
He knocked softly, but it still came as a surprise. His voice came through slightly muffled as he was also speaking softly.
“Peach, I’m sorry I upset you. Look, you don’t have to drive me back to the Hideout. I’m going to go call Wayne and get out of your hair.”
He waited a beat, listening for any kind of response but was met with silence.
He picked his head up and turned to go back down the stairs. One step away from the door and he heard it click open as you slowly came into view. Your eyes were red rimmed, you’d been crying again. He wished so desperately you’d let him hold you and wipe them away, be the reason they dried instead of causing them.
You wiped your eyes with the back of your hand and sniffled.
“That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. We’re both adults, I think I can handle a car ride with you for another 15 minutes. Don’t call Wayne and interrupt his day. God knows he’s been through enough with you.”
He chuckled at that and nodded as he made his way back down the stairs so you could finish getting dressed.
The quiet between you was filled by the radio softly playing, not easing any of the palpable tension in the car and not really distracting your mind from replaying your entire relationship over and over. Being this close to him the past was all you could think about.
He was looking out the window for most of the trip, fingers drumming a beat on his thigh and humming a tune you didn’t recognize. You were trying to focus on the road and ignore him in the process. It wasn’t working as your eyes began to drift once more.
He still wore rings on his fingers, but they were a definite upgrade from the ones he used to wear. The ones he cherished, finding them at local rummage sales or thrift stores. Most didn’t fit properly, so he fitted them with tape, but each one hand picked and worn with pride.
Then you noticed it, he was wearing one you recognized because you had bought it for him on the last birthday you spent together.
Your breathing hitched, as a little sound came from your throat. He heard and whipped his head in your direction.
“Hmmm? D’you say something?” he asked, your face burning hot under his questioning wide-eyed gaze.
“Nope.” You replied looking straight ahead, clearing your throat. “Throat’s a little scratchy.”
“Oh.” He mumbled.
He went back to drumming.
It was then you heard a familiar, velvety smooth voice through the speakers.
“Oh shit!” Eddie’s boisterous voice startled you. He reached over and turned the volume up a couple of notches.
“Shit, sorry. This is off the new album. I didn’t think they were releasing it until next week.” He smiled, nodding along to his own voice coming through the speakers. His voice always made you melt. Even now you can’t deny the effect it had on you. Except, he isn’t just singing for you at a small gig, he’s singing for the entire world.
You had thoroughly avoided Corroded Coffin’s music at all costs. You’d turn off the TV or radio as soon as you recognized the tune or voice. You hated admitting to yourself how good this song was.
“It’s good.” You hummed.
“Yeah? This was the best song. The rest just didn’t feel right. Felt like… Feels like we’re just losing our spark. Or maybe I am. I don’t know any more Peach.” He chewed his lip and stared out the window once more watching Hawkins pass by.
You weren’t sure how to respond, as you pulled into gravel lot, spotting his rental car. The only vehicle in front of the bar.
“Well, at least they didn’t tow the damn thing. Maybe Hopper talked to the owner for me.” He chuckled.
“Yeah, maybe.” Trying to hold back a grin and a laugh.
You parked next to the sedan. He suddenly didn’t want to go. He had a sinking feeling of impending doom knowing this very well could be his last goodbye. He hesitated, hand held tight to the handle but not moving.
You surprised him by opening your own door and quickly stepping out.
He followed suit and hastily exited. He watched as you started walking toward the bar. The very closed bar.
“Uh Peach, where y’ going?” he called after you.
“It’s ok, I know the owner really well.” Shaking your keys toward him as you made it to the front entrance taking one and slotting into the lock.
“I didn’t think Hank owned it anymore.” He shouted back, jogging over to you.
“He doesn’t.” You chuckled, turning the lights on as you entered.
Randy and the night waitress left the place in pretty good shape for opening. You had to take inventory, putting it off yesterday because Eddie had been holed up in the parking lot.
He followed behind you, albeit a little hesitantly.
“So, Hank retired about 2 years ago. But uh… he wanted to keep it in the family. Unfortunately for him his son, you remember Paul from school, right?” Eddie nodded wondering where this story was headed as you continued.
“Pauly didn’t want it. But fortunately, he did have an only niece that did.” Your grin was wide as Eddie let it sink in.
“You own the Hideout?” Eyebrows disappearing under his bangs as he pointed at you. Your turn to nod.
“Mmmhmm. Yep. She’s all mine.” You turn to look around the desolate space not missing the way Eddie was now gawking in disbelief.
He put his hands to his hips, studying your profile a moment.
“Full of surprises Peach.” He finally settled.
“Well,” you finally let yourself turn back him. “I need to do some inventory since someone messed it up for me yesterday.”
“Oh, yeah. Sure.”
You went to the back room grabbing your clipboard ready to put this morning and the last couple of days behind you. The sooner he leaves the better off you’ll be. Back to life as usual.
When you re-emerged, he was wandering around the empty space, seemingly lost in thought.
The seat he was avoiding at the end of the bar last night was now calling to him. His feet were carrying him as if by their own volition.
He scooted the stool out from under the bar, squeaking a little on the floor as it went and lowered himself onto the vinyl padded top.
He ran his finger across the etching still there in the bar top as he smiled to himself.
“Still there huh?” he smirked your way as you looked up from the clipboard.
“Yeap. Still there.” Your eyes met his. “Don’t flatter yourself Eddie, I haven’t gotten around to changing the bar top.”
“Ah,” was all he could manage, his elbows sat on the edge as he looked back down at those letters that didn’t mean much to anyone anymore, he supposed. A moment captured in time. Created by someone who was very much in love. Very much still in love if he was being honest with himself.
“If you say so,” he finally muttered.
“Eddie, if you don’t mind, I’m busy. You can go at any time.” You didn’t make an attempt to look up as you spoke, jotting some numbers down on the paper in front of you. You could feel him looking at you.
“Yeah, yeah sure. I’ll go.” He stood, taking one last glance, resigning himself to failure once more. This is the longest you’d two been in a room without being at each other’s throats and it was nice. He could almost picture the way things used to be.
You brushed some hair behind your ear, as you chewed on the end of a pen. He thought it was cute the way you still did that when you were thinking. The way your nose would scrunch slightly when something was bothering you. He knew something was still on your mind.
He got up, pushing the stool back under the bar. Inhaling a deep breath, taking a step toward the exit before your voice stopped him in his tracks.
“Eddie,” your voice was soft, and timid. He didn’t turn around.
“Why?” It was a simple question. One he had been prepared to answer since he got back to Hawkins. “You at least owe me that.”
He slowly spun around, meeting you eye to eye.
“I thought…” he took another deep breath.
Don’t fuck this up Munson, he thought to himself before continuing.
“I thought if I asked you to move out there with me, you were going to say no. We were in such different places; I knew you would never leave Hawkins and everyone here. So, I ended things before you would have the chance to do it first. I know it sounds so stupid when I say it out loud, but I hurt you before you got the chance to hurt me, Peach.”
Seven years. Seven years of heartache with no closure. This is his explanation. You felt nauseated.
You knew Eddie’s past. His dad always pushed him away, leaving for weeks or months at a time. He never properly delt with those unresolved issues and he pushed it back onto you. He was never afraid of commitment, but he always voiced his concerns about you “wising up and leaving him someday.”
So, this was it. All of this could have been avoided had he stayed with you until morning. You would have gone to the end of the Earth with him had he asked. Time you could never get back. Time you could never replace.
You swallowed down the bile threatening to rise. Willing your eyes to stay dry. You hadn’t realized when he had stepped closer into your space, but he was suddenly right in front of you.
“Seven years Eddie. You waited seven years to tell me that? And you didn’t even give me the chance to give you an answer.” Your heart felt like it was breaking all over again.
“If you had given me the choice, I would have said yes.” His face shot up.
“I would have gone anywhere with you if you had just asked. If you had stayed instead of making that decision for me, you would have known. I had it already planned out.”
Looking a bit more confused at that statement, he furrowed his brow. You pinned him with a burning gaze.
“I was planning on transferring to be closer to you that fall. I had this big speech prepared; brochures laid out. Instead, you did what you thought was best for me but maybe you just did it because it was best for you. You didn’t give me the chance to make up my own mind. And I hate you for that!”
Tears now streaming down your face, you couldn’t stop them if you tried. You stalked over to him, determined, fists clenched at your sides. You pushed him with all the strength you had.
Stumbling a step back, he let you assault his chest with your fists.
“I hate you Eddie! I hate you! I hate you!” Repeating it over and over. The resentment you had been holding finally boiling over.
You continued this onslaught until you collapsed into his chest. Fists closing in and wringing the fabric of his shirt through your hands. He stayed silent letting you get out all that you needed as sobs wracked your body. Hot tears pooled and dampened the cotton of his t-shirt.
He cautiously wrapped his arms around you, placing his cheek to the top of your head. He started humming and slowly swaying side to side. It was purely instinctual. He just wanted to comfort you.
“Sweetheart, I’m so, so sorry. I know you’ll never forgive me, but I need you to know that I regret that decision every goddamn day of my life.”
The anger slowly faded. Pulling yourself together a tiny bit and with all the courage you could muster, you dared to look up at him.
He sent you a genuine smile. The kind that made your stomach do flips. His face flashing something you couldn’t quite read. His eyes darted to your lips and back up. Had you not been intently staring you would have missed the small movement.
“Don’t hate me for this, at least more than you already do.”
“For wha” The words died on your lips.
In one fell swoop he moved his hand cupping your jaw in his warm palm, letting the other fall to your hip. His lips met yours with a feverish need. Warm and inviting. You could taste the lingering coffee he had from earlier.
All at once you felt fuzzy and all you could do was melt into his embrace as he invaded your senses. His taste. His smell. It surrounded you. Until your brain finally caught up with what was happening.
You quickly took a step back, and without thinking smacked him across the cheek. The sound echoed in the quiet building.
“Um… Yeah… I deserved that.” He said, rubbing the fresh sting you had created, skin already turning red.
You held your hand to your lips, still buzzing from the small amount of attention.
“I’m sorry. I… You…” You were suddenly at a loss for words.
“I’m not sorry.” He whispered. “It was worth it. At least one last time.” He looked directly at you. Eyes now pleading.
You’d be lying to yourself if you didn’t at least feel some electricity still buzzing beneath your skin. The electricity between the both of you. The spark that only his touch left in its wake.
“Eddie, I…” you took a small step toward him. Your mind was screaming at you to turn away. Leave it be. It’s not worth it. He’s going to stomp on your heart all over again. But there was something there beneath all the noisy chatter.
“I think you should leave.” You quietly spoke but you were staring into those deep, chocolate pools that you had spent so many days lost in. You were starting to feel a little lost at this very moment. Something in the back of your mind, pulling you in and telling you to let go. Maybe this time would be different.
What if he stayed? And that thought scared you more than anything.
The seconds ticked by without either of you moving away.
He searched your face but wasn’t sure what you were thinking.
“Can… Can I kiss you?” He asked apprehensively.
“I don’t think that would be a good idea.” Speaking without any real intent as you inched closer into his space. No, this was a really bad idea but in this moment, you didn’t allow yourself to care.
“You aren’t going to smack me this time, are you?” He chuckled, moving both of his hands up to cup your face. His warm palms inviting in stark contrast to the cool metal of his rings that sent a shiver down your spine.
“Shut up, Eddie.” You drew closer tilting your head slightly, noses just skimming until your lips slightly ghosted over his. That was all the confirmation he needed.
Letting your eyes fall shut and allowing him to finally close the rest of the distance.
His lips slotted perfectly against yours, just the way you remembered. The soft, supple muscles moving perfectly in rhythm with your own. You sighed into the kiss, melting a little more into his embrace.
You moved your hand up to his chest, clutching the fabric of his shirt to ground yourself. His chest warm beneath your touch, even through the fabric you could feel his heart beathing erratically.
He dared to glide his tongue across your lower lip begging for entry. You were about to grant him the access you both so desperately craved when you heard the front door swing open with a loud squeak.
You had forgotten to lock it.
You pulled away from him and jumped back as he followed suit, putting some distance between the two of you.

Eddie laid there flitting in and out of consciousness. His mind and body weren’t ready to face whatever fresh hell the day had in store for him.
Somewhere before drifting back off, he felt a slight pressure on his cheek, as if something lightly touched him. He groaned just a bit, adjusting his position pushing his face further into the fabric.
A fabric he realized felt foreign. He breathed deeply, unfamiliar yet pleasant scents filling his lungs. It was something that reminded him of home even though he had never felt quite at home anywhere in the past seven years.
He heard distant voices. Not overly loud but the way they seemed to speak suggested it was an argument. Hushed, but rushed out tones. He began to rouse more, his head was already beginning to pound, a harsh reminder of what he had consumed the night before.
Then he felt it again, this poke at his cheek, a little harder than before. He peeked one eye open, as his hazy vision began to clear, straining against the morning light coming in from a nearby window.
It took a few seconds to come into focus, a chubby cheeked little girl staring at him with curly brown hair and hazel eyes that sparkled as she grinned with her baby teeth on full display. She giggled at him.
That fully caught his attention, he opened both eyes and sat up in a flurry, throwing the blanket from himself, which made the toddler laugh out louder. His hair frizzy, sticking up. He knew he looked a mess; a wave of nausea momentarily seized him with the sudden movement.
“Hi!” she spoke sweetly.
It all slowly started to come back to him. The Hideout, Hopper, You.
You had come to get him. Even if you didn’t care about him that had to mean something, right?
He sat all the way up, putting his feet on the ground, head falling into his hands. He let out a low groan. Not meaning to ignore the other person in the room, but his hangover was washing over him, slowly dragging him under.
She sat beside him, pressing her small leg into his thigh. He looked over at her still bleary eyed, she spoke again with a bright smile on display.
“Hi!”
“Ugh, hi.” He finally replied.
“Your sock is gone.” He followed where her little finger was pointing. Indeed, his right sock was missing. He turned to the end of the couch spotting it tucked into the end cushion.
“Ah ha!” he smiled, producing the lost item. She giggled again as he bent to return it to its rightful place.
“You wan play wif me?” she tilted her head as she spoke as if trying to figure him out.
“Ugh, where’s your mom and dad? In the kitchen?” he asked her, not trying to be rude to a kid but he bet you and Steve were ready to kick his ass out as soon as you caught wind that he was awake.
She scrunched her nose slightly as her little eyebrows knit together in confusion. She was about to speak but you came into view and drew his full attention.
“Maddie, baby, there you are.” His eyes darted to you then to Steve close behind.
“Peach! Daddy!” She squealed in his ear, earning another shot of pain in his already throbbing head.
You walked over to where they both sat, pointedly ignoring the look Eddie was giving you.
“Come finish your breakfast, then we’re going to do whatever you want! It’s Maddie’s day!”
She immediately hopped down from her place on the couch, taking your hand and happily following you back into the kitchen. Why the hell did she just call you Peach instead of Mom? He didn’t have time to dwell as his eyes trailed after you.
He had to admit, motherhood looked good on you. Even in your pajamas and hair a mess you looked beautiful. You’d never explicitly told him you’d wanted kids but then again you two were still young and had never really brought up the subject.
Steve caught him staring, giving him an overly annoyed look but didn’t say anything, rolling his eyes and turning to join you.
He sat back on the couch, pressing his palms against his eyes momentarily to collect himself. It was unusual at this stage in the rockstar life that he had a hangover; he knew he had overdone it.
He slowly started to take in his surroundings.
You had been doing well for yourself, your house wasn’t lavish, but it wasn’t modest either. He imagined Steve had some cushy job at some law firm, but Steve was never the type to show out, surprisingly that had been a trait he hadn’t inherited from his parents.
There were pictures of all various shapes and sizes hung on one of the living room walls. It was evident each one had been placed there with the utmost care. He skimmed each photo; most faces he recognized, a few he didn’t.
Max in a graduation gown, your arm wrapped around her shoulders hugging her tightly, faces pressed together grinning ear to ear.
Dustin and Suzie on their wedding day, smiles walking hand in hand down the aisle just after saying their “I do’s.”
Mike, El, and Will in their swimsuits at what appeared to be the beach. Each one sitting on a towel catching some rays.
Robin and Steve packed like sardines beside each other on a small love seat fast asleep.
Lucas and Max looking away from the camera, but you had captured them holding hands. A rarity for Max to show affection in public.
You even had a rare photo of Hopper smiling with Joyce in front of a Christmas tree.
Then he saw one that stopped and made him stare a little longer. You were holding a baby looking down at her with the most adoration he’d ever seen but it’s a look he already knew well. It was the same one he saw in you back then, looking at him. Except he knew there was no expectation of this little, tiny being you were holding. It was unconditional love.
He slowly made his way down the rest of the wall, seeing everything that took place in his absence. All the younger teens were now fully-fledged adults. Married, getting married, or even having children of their own. Life in Hawkins had moved on without him.
He was so lost in the faces of his old friends, he hadn’t noticed Steve re-enter the room, standing behind him now. He cleared his throat, momentarily startling him.
“Christ,” he spat, holding his chest for a beat as he looked over at an unamused Steve, who was leaned against the door frame, arms folded over his chest. He didn’t immediately speak, so Eddie broke the awkward silence.
“It’s ugh… it’s amazing what you miss being away. Life really does just go on without you.” Looking away from the other man to finish scanning the wall.
“What are you doing?” Steve was already irritated and wasn’t going in the mood to tip toe around.
“Uh, I… looking at photos…,” pointing to the wall, like it was the most logical answer ever.
“No, man. I mean what are you doing here? Showing up out of nowhere, interrupting her life?” he shoved off the door frame, standing up straighter as he spoke, squaring his broad shoulders.
“I…,” he wasn’t sure how to answer. His mouth opened and closed as he tried to think of a response.
“I’m not really sure anymore,” he finally exhaled, truthfully. He dropped his gaze to the floor as his shoulders drooped.
“She doesn’t want you here.” He hissed lowly. Eddie snapped his head up at that, tilting his head slightly.
“That so Harrington? Why am I here then? Hmm?” looking the other man directly in the eyes. “Unless…” a moment from last night suddenly came back to him but Steve interjected before Eddie could finish.
“You’re here because you’re an idiot. You do what you do best, fuck up and she doesn’t have the heart to turn you away. Even after everything you did to her.” Steve stepped closer.
Eddie’s anger was seeping through, though he knew the other man was speaking nothing but the truth. He scoffed.
“You know I’m betting the only reason you haven’t kicked me out yet is because you don’t want to piss her off. No matter how mad it makes YOU that I’m here.” He paused, examining Steve a moment, “She said you didn’t live here, right? What’d ya do, knock her up and decide a relationship wasn’t worth it? Staying friends would be better for you? King Steve, always looking for the next thrill. Never looking out for anyone but himself?”
Steve squared up to the metalhead, at this point he was fuming. His hands fisted at his sides. He knew he had to control himself for Maddie’s sake. He took a step closer, poking his finger into Eddie’s chest.
“Back off Munson, you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.”
“Yeah, sure Harrington.”
Eye to eye, neither backing down until they heard you call for Steve down the hall.
He turned without another word to the metalhead retreating to the kitchen leaving Eddie alone once more with the wall of smiling, happy faces looking back at him.
In this moment, he longed to see his own smiling face staring back at him. At least then, he wouldn’t feel this regret blooming up through his chest threatening to suffocate him.
But he had lived and had a life outside of this place. He was happy. Wasn’t he? Why was it beginning to feel like he didn’t know anymore?
Back in the kitchen, Steve rounded the corner. His cheeks and tips of his ears tinged pink, jaw clenched, mouth set in a thin line. The way he stalked over to you made you a little nervous. He was so mad it radiated from him.
“What happened?” you asked timidly.
“Why don’t you ask Munson?” he spat, pausing briefly before you. You were stunned momentarily. The way his eyes wouldn’t meet yours, but you could tell there was something else there behind them. He looked hurt.
He shook his head and walked over to Maddie’s bag, hoisting it over his shoulder.
“Steve?” Asking again, a little more tremble to your voice, worry working over your features.
Choosing to ignore you, he made his way over to the young girl blissfully unaware of the newly added tension in the room.
“Maddie,” he got down to her level, she was in the chair chewing on a muffin she had settled on.
She looked up at him, soft eyes, happy from having her sugar fix first thing in the morning, happily swinging her feet.
“I know you wanted to stay with Aunt Peach today, but Aunt Robin is going to watch you instead. You can take your muffin with you.” He was trying to speak softly, but it sounded forced, as he patted her small leg.
“But daddy…” she began to protest, her bottom lip forming a small pout as she spoke, crossing her arms in protest.
“Maddie, you’re going to Aunt Robin’s,” he shot back. Her little lip wavered with his harsh tone, eyes sparkling with tears threatening to spill.
You weren’t sure what had gone on in the next room, but there was no use in trying to reason with him right now. His mind was made up.
You leaned down to her as well, side pressed into Steve, who flinched momentarily. You tried to ignore the way small movement made you feel dejected as you focused on speaking to her.
“Hey Maddie,” you spoke softly, but firmly, gaining her attention. “Auntie Peach had something come up but you can come over this weekend and hang out. How about that? We can even go out to Benny’s if you want?”
She looked at Steve, then back over to you.
“Okay.” She still had a small pout, but she was satisfied for now.
With that, Steve stood, picking her up and taking her muffin along without saying another word.
“Bye Peach,” she waved behind him. “I wuv you!” With an exaggerated kiss to her palm then opening it toward you, trying to blow it your way.
“Love you too sweet girl.”
You watched them leave, without protest, he didn’t spare another glance toward you. There was no tender touch or hug to bid you goodbye. No chaste kiss to your temple or forehead bidding his departure.
He only slammed the door behind him, which made you jump. The house was suddenly too quiet.
You took a deep breath and took a step toward the living room.
Steve hadn’t meant to leave you like that. He really didn’t mean to slam the door.
When Eddie started spouting bullshit he didn’t have a clue about he let it get to him. All he could see was red. It took everything in him to keep his composure and not go ballistic on either of you. He wasn’t King Steve. Hadn’t been for a long time.
Once he settled Maddie into the back seat and took his leave, he only made it a couple of blocks before pulling over.
He pulled his glasses off, pinching his nose, taking a few deep breaths to calm himself down.
“Shit,” he hissed low, pushing his head back against the headrest. He eyed Maddie in the rearview. Luckily, she was still far too interested in the muffin she seemed to be savoring to notice the brief stop and changes in his demeanor.
When he thought he had calmed down enough, he started the drive to Robin’s.
When she opened the door, her smile immediately dropped. She knew something was off. Taking in the sight of his disheveled hair, like he had been running his hands through it. A habit she knew all too well of when he was upset.
“Aunt Bobbie!” Maddie yelled, already trying to wriggle free from his arms.
“Steve? What’s wrong?” she rushed out.
“I… I just need to talk to someone. Can we come in?” he asked sheepishly.
“Of course. Get in here.” She moved aside, ushering them both in. “As if you have to ask, Dingus.”
He sat Maddie down, who bolted into the living room where Vickie sat watching the morning news.
“Vick, can you watch her just a few?” Robin asked her girlfriend.
“Yeah, of course. Hey Steve.”
“Hey Vickie,” he shouted back as they made their way into the kitchen for some privacy.
Before Robin could ask him if he wanted something to drink, he made his way over to the phone. She looked at him with confusion for a moment before he began to speak.
“Hey, yeah, it’s Steve. Something came up, I won’t be coming in today.” A few more words were spoken into the receiver before he uttered a goodbye and hung up.
He turned back to her; she was already squinting at him with more suspicion.
“Um, ok. Spill it. You never call out of work unless it’s an emergency.” She bid him to sit down in the chair beside her.
He sighed. Melting into the cushion, letting the weight of the morning sink in. He suddenly felt exhausted.
Robin slowly rubbed circles into his back.
“Fucking Eddie…” he grumbled, almost inaudible but she caught it.
“Eddie? What… I thought… He’s still in Hawkins?” She was trying to process those two small words.
“He… He’s at Peach’s.” Keeping his eyes trained on the floor, rubbing his hand through his hair yet again.
“What?” She whisper yelled, still cognizant of the fact Maddie could pop in at any moment.
“I thought he’d be gone by now. And what the hell is he doing over there? Oh my God, Steve, did she sleep with him?” She got up and started to pace behind him, getting a little louder and more frantic with each sentence.
“Rob,” he sighed.
“Steve, what the hell is she thinking?”
“Rob,” a little more forceful.
She started to chew her bottom lip just a bit, “What…”
“Robin,” he all but yelled, pulling her back into the chair by her wrist.
“Yes, yeah. I’m here.” Focusing all her attention on her forlorn friend.
“He slept on the couch after a drunken night out.” He thought for a moment, licking his lips before choosing his words carefully. “I… I can’t watch her go through all that again when he decides to leave. I can’t sit back and watch him take all of the best parts away from her. You remember what it was like?”
Her gaze softens, she remembers how it was but Steve, ever the best friend, took the brunt of it. Watching her two best friends being idiots around each other then and even more so now.
“This isn’t really about Eddie though, is it?” she spoke softly.
He didn’t respond, still looking at the floor. He was hurting. It was written all over his face.
“Steve,” she took his hand, wanting his full attention as his soft eyes looked into hers, “you have to tell her. If you don’t do it now, I think you’ll regret it for the rest of your life. You aren’t going to lose what you have, that could never happen to you two, but what if you lose the chance to have something more?”
Even back then, she knew he was in love with you but then Eddie happened. Then once he left, it had taken your heart so long to heal that Steve was scared to lose what you had he didn’t want to mess it up.
You had leaned on him to bring you back from the brink. He’d almost confessed a time or two, but it had never felt right. You had closed off your heart and sworn off love altogether.
February 1988
Steve had just gotten back to his apartment that afternoon after a long day of classes, exhaustion hitting him like a ton of bricks. Emily would be over soon so they could cook dinner and watch a movie. Friday nights were strictly for relaxing. The rest of the weekend was used for studying. Just one more year and he would graduate and finally start this life he had planned.
What he hadn’t planned was a frantic knocking at his door, jostling him from his momentary daydream.
He stood from the couch, a little slowly. Whomever was at there must have been impatient because they knocked again.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m coming, I’m coming.” He shouted, reaching for the door. “Hold your…”
As it swung open, the words died on his tongue. He had never expected to see you standing before him. His eyes practically bulged out of his head, taking in your drastic appearance. You were wearing stained pajamas, hair in a messy bun with bags so heavy under your eyes it looked like you hadn’t slept in days.
“Peach, what the hell…” before he could finish his sentence, you practically threw yourself at him, momentarily knocking him off balance. You clung to him for dear life as you started to cry. He wrapped his arms around you pulling you further into his chest.
He was so worried when you wouldn’t stop crying, he had no idea what was going on. He was panicking on the inside but was trying to keep his composure.
“Honey, you have to calm down. You have to tell me what’s going on.” He spoke softly, cradling your head, while his other hand rubbed soothingly up and down your back.
You had driven all the way to Indy without a phone call. He knew it was bad.
He finally coaxed you to sit down with him on the couch. You were still clinging to his side but calming down.
“Peach, it’s okay. Whatever it is, it’s going to be okay.”
“Eddie left.” You whispered into his shirt, muffled where your face was still pressed close to him.
“What do you mean he left? I thought he was still in LA?” he asked softly, matching your tone.
You finally found enough strength to pull yourself up to face him. His eyes full of concern, searching yours for some kind of answer.
“He came to visit me last weekend.” Your lip trembled, voice threatening to give out as a fresh wave of tears began to spill but you needed to get it all out.
“I could tell something wasn’t right. The way he had been acting. I… I should have known this was going to happen. God, I’m so dumb.”
“Hey, hey. Stop it. You’re not dumb.” He grabbed your hand as you threaded your fingers through his.
“God Steve, I was just so happy to see him. He was trying to tell me before… before I told him it could wait. I just… I wanted to have him close to me.”
Steve knew what you were saying without coming out with it. His stomach lurched at the thought. You’d had sex and he’d left you when you had been at your most vulnerable. He stayed silent, letting you continue.
“We didn’t talk, we… and then he… he was gone in the morning. He left me a stupid fucking note that just said I’m sorry. I’ve called him for a week, and he hasn’t returned any of my calls. He’s just gone.”
Steve was stunned. He’d never thought Eddie could do this to you.
“He’s an idiot.” He mumbled, “You want me to track him down and beat some sense into him? I mean what the hell is he thinking?” At least he could try humor, he was good at deflecting.
“Given your track record with fights, I’m not sure how much use you’d be.” You smiled and giggled for the first time all week.
“There she is. At least I can still make you smile. I’m useful for something.” He grinned back.
He had all but forgotten about his usual date night with Emily, until he heard the door open as she stepped in. It startled the both of you, as he jumped to his feet to greet her.
“Steve, I…” she stopped as soon as she saw you, eyes rimmed red looking an absolute wreck.
“Hey, Em,” he kissed her cheek, and took her bags, setting them down. “Uh, I am so sorry, I would have called but uh,” turning back to you as if trying to convey a point.
“Is she okay?” her gaze left you to look back at her boyfriend.
“Yeah, yeah. Well, no. Do you think we can just take a rain check for tonight? Back to it next week?” he smiled that crooked grin that most women couldn’t resist.
“Yeah, sure. Sure.” She looked back at you then and waved. You raised your own hand in a wave back.
“I’ll call you in the morning babe.” He pecked her lips quickly, as she walked back out of the apartment.
You felt like a nuisance, an intruder. Steve had his own life without you barging in unannounced dragging him down with you.
“I’m sorry. I should have just called but I…”
He immediately shut you down, no apologies needed. He ordered pizza from his favorite place, and you mostly spent the night in comfortable silence eating and watching some cheesy horror fic.
He insisted you take his bed for the night, and he would take the couch, but you wouldn’t hear of it. You laid face to face, chatting about nothing and for a few moments it all seemed right in the world.
All of a sudden, it felt like summer break and long chats at night by the pool spending all your time telling your best friend all of your secrets. You had missed him. He spent the rest of the night reassuring you that it wasn’t your fault, and it would be okay. You would get through it.
He woke the next day to find you were still facing each other. You were curled up tightly with your fist under your chin as if on guard even in your sleep. He couldn’t help but feel helpless. He knew he couldn’t make it better, but he could at least make it easier.
He let himself brush the hair out of your face. The subtle touch had you chasing the warmth of his hand. He cradled your face for a moment, his palm resting against your cheek fingers slightly tangled in your hair as your breathing evened back out.
For a moment, he let his eyes trace the features of your face. Your eyes danced slightly behind your eyelids, and he wondered what you were dreaming of. The way your cupids bow beckoned him forward as your lips parted just slightly with every exhale that produced the perfect pout.
He knew it was wrong. Eddie had just broken your heart and his thoughts were selfish. He internally scolded himself and removed his hand, instead opting to pull you close to his chest, kissing your head softly as he heard you sigh. He slowly drifted back off the sleep with you curled into him.
Once you both woke, untangling from one another, the reality of the day set in.
You couldn’t stay here. You both knew that.
He called to check on you nearly every day after; coming to visit at least every other weekend. You felt like he had you on suicide watch. Which, for the record, never once crossed your mind.
All the extra time spent with you began to put a strain on his relationship with Emily.
It’s like she could sense what he wasn’t telling her. What practically anyone from the outside looking in could tell. Steve would never admit it to anyone, let alone himself.
She had finally told him that it was either you or her. Her mistake was thinking that she was even a choice when it came to you.
Dating was put on the back burner for a while. He instead helped you through the most difficult year of your life.
He stayed in Indy after graduation, landing a good job. You two stayed close despite the small distance.
He encouraged you to start dating again, even though it was killing him inside. He wanted to see you happy.
“And what about you Steve? You need to get back out there. You haven’t had a proper date in over a year.” You snorted.
“Yeah, well this isn’t about me.” He chuckled back to you.
“I’ll start dating when Hell freezes over.” You shot back.
“Well, maybe I’m right there with you.”
Time passed after that conversation. He never brought it back up to you.
1991
Steve Harrington could never seem to find the right girl to settle down with. Not for his lack of trying. He had broken numerous hearts, and in turn, had his own broken a time or two.
All he really longed for was someone to call his own. Someone that would stick around after they really got to know him. Get married. Start a family. He had it all planned out in his head.
He still had the occasional hook-ups from time to time. He wasn’t celibate and he got lonely.
And one day, he got a call from someone he had fooled around with about 3 months prior. She broke the news that she was pregnant, and it was his.
His world literally felt like it was caving in around him and his plans were crumbling before his eyes. He barely knew this woman and yet she was going to have his child.
He remembered the cheery blonde with piercing blue eyes that he knew absolutely nothing else about. They had met at a bar close to his office. They had fooled around exactly two times. He supposed it was a sick joke the universe was playing on him.
He was drunk the second time and forgotten to wear a condom. He had royally fucked up and there was only one person he trusted enough to talk to.
“Hey Stevie! Aren’t you working today?” your voice immediately calmed his rattled nerves.
“Yeah, I am but uh, I’m leaving early. I need to talk to you.” he sounded breathless near the end.
“Steve, is everything alright?”
“No. I’ve got some news and I just need my best friend right now, but I don’t really want to talk about it over the phone.”
“Well, just come over to my place. We’ll just figure everything out. Whatever it is, okay?” you tried to sound convincing, to placate him even though you were freaking out at what he wasn’t telling you.
When he made it to your house, he laid it all out on the line. Everything he knew thus far. You had listened without judgement and reassured him that you would be there the whole way. No matter what. And you had, with no hesitation.
Once his parents heard the news his dad offered to bribe her into getting rid of baby, but Steve immediately shut it down.
“It’s your grandchild, how the hell could you even say that?” But it fell on deaf ears, they didn’t care. They were trying to preserve the Harrington name from any scandal.
He tried to do the right thing. Date her, take care of her. Hell, it’d crossed his mind to marry her, but it quickly dawned on him how truly different they were. It would never have worked out. She was a waitress at the bar where they had met. She wasn’t wealthy by any means, but she knew he was or at least his family was.
He had hoped they could remain civil, but it wasn’t in the cards for him. It didn’t take her long to start asking him for money to stick around.
He didn’t know what to do so he kept her paid and content.
He drove her to every doctor’s appointment making sure the baby was good every step of the way.
They found out they were having a girl and Steve was over the moon. He immediately went to your place showing you the sonogram. The way he traced her small features in black and white still had your heart melting. He was already in love with her.
It was a beautiful, crisp day when she arrived that October. A perfect day in his mind. You accompanied him to the hospital. Both of you were jittery and anxious. Much to his dismay, she wouldn’t let him in the delivery room. Your heart broke for him. If she wasn’t in the middle of giving birth, it had crossed your mind to punch her stupid smug face.
She arrived without any complications. A beautiful, healthy 7-pound 3-ounce perfect little angel. Madelynn Grace Harrington. Luckily, Steve had been able to name her. Oddly enough that was one thing she hadn’t fought.
You watched him gingerly pick her up for the first time from the bassinet, cradling her tiny head and pulling her tiny body into his chest. His eyes began to tear at the sight of her. It was pure joy written on his face as he looked down at the tiny bundle. He was awestruck.
“I just,” voice quavering just a bit as he spoke. “I just can’t believe that she’s mine. My daughter.”
He looked up at you as you let out a small laugh. Your own eyes watering at the scene before you.
“Hi Maddie, I’m your dad. I’m so happy you’re here.” He spoke softly, looking down at this tiny little thing that he had a hand in creating.
“Stevie, I think you were always meant to be a dad.” You were settled beside him, your hand on his back, looking down at his twin. Thankfully she hadn’t inherited the looks from her mother with a head full of chestnut locks and hazel eyes just like Steve.
“You want to hold her?” You quickly nodded.
You sat down, as he brought her close and laid her gently in your awaiting arms. Swaddled head to toe in pink, with a matching pink cap.
She was the most precious thing you had ever laid eyes on. Your finger gently stroked her tiny cheek, as she yawned, with a tiny sigh.
“Hi Maddie. I’m your Auntie Peach. I already love you more than you’ll ever know.”
Steve silently watched you as you watched Maddie. His heart ached in his chest seeing you with his baby. It also broke a little.
After they were discharged from the hospital, Steve only got to see Maddie on the weekends. He had a sinking suspicion this was how it was going to be from the start.
About six months after she was born, blondie threatened to take Maddie and leave town if she didn’t get more money. Fed up, he finally asked her how much it would take for her to leave for good and not come back.
He had to take a loan out that would cost him a small fortune just so she’d sign over her rights, even though she never wanted their daughter to begin with, that much was evident. But he would gladly do it again. He was so thankful you and Robin were there to help him.
You hadn’t given it a second thought when it came to her. Doting on her as if she were your own. So, it was no surprise when Steve had told you he was moving back to Hawkins you insisted on him moving in with you until he found a place.
At some point, you both fell into a routine that felt so natural. So domestic. It felt like the right time, but his anxiety got the better of him. He was so happy with the way things were he didn’t want to lose you by confessing his feelings that would just make it awkward if you didn’t feel the same. He would keep you this way, even if his own heart was aching for so much more.
He waited, biding his time. Waiting for the perfect moment that never came.
“Rob, I can’t complicate things for her. If she wants Munson, I’m not going to stand in her way. She can make up her own mind.”
Robin audibly groaned, shaking her head throwing her hands up in defeat. “You two are even bigger idiots than I thought you were.”
He looked at her, puzzled, eyebrows knit in confusion.
“Rob, what? What does that mean?”
The only sound was Robin dropping her head in dramatic fashion to the table with a loud thump.

Steve stopped talking as soon as he saw the disheveled, flustered appearances of you both. Eyes bouncing from you to Eddie and settling back to you. His own face reflecting confusion for a split second before his mind registered what he had just walked in on before casting a crestfallen appearance.
Your cheeks were burning, you could only imagine the shade of red they currently held. Feeling like a kid with their hand caught in the cookie jar under the weight of his scrutinizing stare.
“Steve?” You asked, clearing your throat. “Uh, what’re you doing here?” Crossing your arms, weight shifting side to side on the balls of your feet.
“I mean, I came to talk to you, what the hell are you doing with him?” He scoffed, hand gesturing between you.
“Hey man, no need to get all pissy. Peach is a big girl; she can make her own decisions.” Eddie shot back, taking a step closer toward him, hands by his sides but in a protective stance moving more in front of you.
“Eddie, man, just butt out. I’m talking to her.” He countered. You rolled your eyes, knowing exactly where this was headed.
You immediately jumped in between them, deciding to interject before these two hot heads decided to duke it out in the bar: placing your palm to Steve’s chest, with Eddie to your back.
“Okay, that’s quite enough.” Looking at Eddie over your shoulder, before turning back to Steve.
“Steve, behave. And if you can’t, then go back outside. Can you give us a minute? ” He scoffed, rolling his eyes but obliged your request and moved a few feet back giving you and Eddie a little more space.
“Eddie,” you placed your hand on his arm, turning to fully face him. “I think you should go.”
“Peach, could I come back later? Maybe when you aren’t busy? We uh,” awkwardly looking at Steve for a moment over your shoulder but continued, “we could talk a little more?” He had this hopeful glint in his eye that cracked your chest wide open.
“I…This… was a mistake. You should just go.” Casting your eyes toward the floor as his hope faded into nothing. Heart shattering into a million pieces. Time to pack up, turn tail and run. End of the line.
“So, this is it?” He finally spoke, voice coming out a little strained. “Peach, please don’t let this be the last time we talk. This can’t be the end, right? You can’t stand here and act like you didn’t feel anything.”
What had he really expected from this? Good endings only happen in the movies.
“I don’t know right now Eddie.” Drowning in so many emotions, you couldn’t think clearly. Nothing felt right. You close your eyes in frustration, letting out a long breath.
“I just need time to think,” you finally settled on, as you looked back at him.
He could feel a fresh sting behind his eyes as he nodded and slowly backed away from you, giving you one more once over. Committing all he could to memory because in his mind this very well could be the last goodbye.
“Uh yeah, sure. I’ll be at Wayne’s at least for a couple more days. Goodbye Peach.” He hurriedly made his escape, effectively dodging Steve in the process. He was sure he was donning some smug smirk that he couldn’t bear to look at. The thought made his stomach churn.
Robin watched from the front seat of Steve's car as Eddie exited the Hideout, head hung low. He looked like a man that had just been hung out to dry.
She watched him trudge across the parking lot, slowly making his way over to the black sedan parked by your car.
Robin couldn't control what she was doing, as if she was on autopilot. She quickly moved from her seat and jogged over to Eddie, as he was fumbling with his keys.
“Eddie?” She said, a little apprehensively.
His head darted up to see who had gotten his attention. He shot her a brief smile, before the key finally gave way in the lock.
“Buckley. Hey. Long time.” He played coy. Preparing for yet another tongue lashing from this ghost from his past.
“Yeah, yeah it has been.” She looked down, rolling a rock beneath her shoe. “Too long really.”
“Yeah, I suppose so.” He looked sheepish. Robin was always one to speak her mind. He watched her intently as she mulled it over.
“Just remember something for me. It's not just her life you're affecting by showing up like this. She means too much to a lot of people here.”
“Yeah, I know Buckley.” She didn’t need to say anything else. He knew where she was coming from.
She nodded and crossed the parking, disappearing back into the front of Steve’s car.
He knew she was right. It’d been a common theme since his arrival. Everyone reminded him of how much he’d lost.
You watched him leave. Had it been a mistake? It hadn’t felt like it at that moment. In those few quiet moments, it felt like no time had passed at all between you at all.
You were so lost in thought you had almost forgotten the other person still in the room.
“Peach, I…” Steve began, but you raised your hand, effectively silencing him, as he snapped his mouth closed.
“If you came here to give me another lecture and berate me for the choices I’ve made the past couple of days, save it. You can take your ass right out that door too.”
“No, I didn’t come here for that…” He took a deep breath, slowly releasing it. “I came here to apologize, and…”
You cautiously look him over, squinting with suspicion. He seemed nervous. In all the years that you had known Steve Harrington, you could literally count the times he had been nervous on one hand. It usually involves girls and feelings. So, what was he so worked up about?
“Seriously, Steve, what? What is wrong with you?” You huffed out, rolling your eyes in the process. Patience worn thin from this morning's antics. You were growing more agitated with his slow response.
“Can you just let me finish before interrupting me? Fuck, Peach.” He covered his face with his palms and groaned out. “Jesus Christ,” came out muffled behind his hands.
“Oh, please do, go on. This apology is off to a great start.” You snapped back.
He lowered his hands, bringing them to his hips.
“For once, just listen to me. You deserve so much better than this, better than what he put you through. How can you not see that?”
“And how the fuck would you know what's better for me? Huh?” You were tired, you hadn’t really meant to snap but it just came out and it was too late now. “Can you just go? I’m tired of talking.”
“No.” He stood a little straighter, squaring his shoulders. "I have always been here to look out for you. I can't watch you go through all of this again once he decides this isn't what he wants.”
“And who said you had to? What if this time it's different? What if this is what he wants? What I want? Don't I deserve to be happy?” You lashed out.
“Of course, you deserve to be happy! Whether that's with him or… or… someone else. I just don't want you to look back another seven years from now and wish you'd made a different choice. You can’t depend on him for your happiness!” He sighed. “You deserve someone who isn't okay with losing you!”
It was on the tip of his tongue. All he had to do was say it. Three little words that would change both of your lives forever.
The way you were currently looking at him made his chest ache. He wanted nothing more than to take you into his arms and tell you it would be ok. He would take care of you. You wouldn’t have to worry about anything anymore.
You could be with him. He would make you happy. Even if you didn’t love him the way he loves you, maybe in time you could grow to love him. The way you love Maddie unconditionally, the way you care about everyone else first, putting your own needs aside. You deserve someone that would love you right and show you what you mean to them.
“Peach I…” He looked into your big, glossy eyes. You’d already been through too much.
He swallowed, “I just want you to be happy.”
“Steve… I know you do but this isn’t something you can’t help me with. I have to do this on my own. I have to figure this out on my own, but please know that whatever decision I make I wouldn’t dream of leaving my sweet baby. She couldn’t deal with her daddy on her own. I know that’s what you’re worried about,” you smiled and crossed the bar, pushing yourself into his space, wrapping your arms around his middle seeking out his comfort.
He returned your hug, pulling you in and sighing as you tucked your head under his chin.
“Thank you.” You whispered. “For always being there for me. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
He closed his eyes, kissing the top of your head before laying his cheek against you.
He was utterly fucked. His time was dwindling, and he didn’t know where to go from here, but he did know one thing as he told you as much.
“I’ll always be here for you, Peach.” And he would be, no matter what may happen next.
Eddie knew he would be leaving Hawkins a defeated man. His one chance had blown up in his face. He was a fool to think you’d ever consider taking his pathetic ass back. He felt blessed with the small amount of attention you had bestowed upon him because you were right you didn’t owe him anything.
He drove back to Wayne’s in silence, wallowing in his misery. He hadn’t even bothered with the radio.
Eddie trudged his way back into the house, sure Wayne was expecting him back at any moment.
“Wayne?” he shouted as he entered. “Hey, old man, where y’at?”
“In the kitchen Ed.”
Eddie padded through the house, leaning in the doorway as he spotted Wayne standing over the stove stirring something simmering in a small pot.
“Hey pops, whatcha cookin’?” he asks, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Just heating up some soup.” He said over his shoulder, checking Eddie from the corner of his eye. “Want some? I know it’s not much.”
Wayne was getting older. Voice a little more gruff, hair that he still had turning a lot grayer. Being away seemed to rob Eddie of the time with his uncle too.
“Sure, I’m famished.” He made his way to the cabinet grabbing two bowls as Wayne went to another and produced some crackers. Sitting everything down at the small eat-in table once their bowls were full.
Eddie sat watching the way the steam wafted for a moment before he dug in. Both men ate in silence before Wayne cleared his throat, grabbing Eddie’s attention.
“Ed, I uh…” Wayne stirred his spoon into the soup as he spoke before letting it go with a small clink to the china.
“Eddie, you went to her drunk? Boy, didn’t I teach you any better than that?” Wayne grumbled out, giving him one hell of a stink eye.
“Fuck.” He was mid bite, dropping his own spoon back to the bowl. “How’d you find out about that?”
“Watch the language around the dinner table. And Jim called me this morning. Was mighty worried about you, son.” His gaze softened on the younger man. He didn’t want to berate him but maybe he could talk a little sense into him.
“Worried?” he let out an indignant scoff. “He’s got nothin’ to worry about with me.”
“Son,” Wayne fixed him with a stern look. “I may be old but I’m not stupid. You show up here unannounced, making an ass of yourself and I know alcohol isn’t the only thing that’s been runnin’ through your system. What is it? Coke? Then what, slamming the alcohol to bring you back down?”
“Uh… That,” Eddie frowned, closing his fist, rapping his knuckles against the table. “I use a little, every now and then. It’s been a hard week.” Shrugging his shoulders.
“Yeah, well, it’s only going to get harder the longer you use. Not to mention how hard that is on your body. Ed, listen to me, you’re a smart kid. Always have been. I’m so happy you can afford this life for the both of us, but don’t let bullshit drag you down.”
Eddie let out a small snort, smirking up. “Now who’s cussing at the table?”
Wayne just shook his head as he continued.
“Listen to me boy. If you’re serious about Peach, you need to make it clear. Don’t play any games. You and I both know you’ve put her through enough.” Eddie nodded.
“Now, I’ve said my piece. You’re a grown man, who’s going to do whatever you want but at least you know where your ole’ man stands.”
Wayne stood from his chair, clearing his bowl and laying into the sink as Eddie did the same.
“I love ya, Pop.” Eddie said to the older, much wiser man.
“I love you too, son.”
Robin was getting antsy. Her leg was bouncing as she started to pick and bite at her cuticles waiting for any sign of Steve.
When he finally appeared she beamed at him, only for him to look worse than when he had gone in. Her smile faded.
“Oh no. No. No. No.” She mutterd to herself as he made his way over to the driver’s side.
He sat in a huff, looking straight ahead. She waited a few moments before finally speaking up.
“Steve?” it came out small, squeaky.
“Don’t.” He continued to look ahead. “I didn’t tell her.”
“Steve!” She slapped his arm as she scolded him. “I swear to God if you don’t march your ass back in there and say something to her, I’ll go, and you know I won’t hold back.”
She eased her hand toward the door handle but stopped when he spoke.
“You can’t Robin. We can’t put more on her right now.” He reluctantly met her worried gaze. He looked tired, spent.
“But Steve, she needs to know! You can’t just walk away and pretend that everything is okay when it’s not. God, you are being so stupid right now!” She huffed out, throwing her head back into the headrest.
“Robin, please, just listen to me. You’re not going to say a word to her. This isn’t mine or anyone else's decision to make for her. I’m not adding to her confusion and frustration. Regardless of how she feels about me or Eddie, I know she won’t leave Maddie. She won’t leave Hawkins.”
It was a moment of clarity for Robin. She realized what he meant.
If you wanted to be with Eddie, she and Steve both knew you’d never leave Maddie. Even though she wasn’t your own by blood, there was no doubt she was yours.
He hesitantly put the keys in the ignition and started the car.
“Where are we going?” Robin chimed in when he turned the opposite direction away from her house.
“I need to make one more stop.”
Eddie and Wayne just sat down to watch some TV when they heard the doorbell. Wayne mumbled a “I’ll get it” as he got up.
He was hoping in some way it was you on the other side of that door.
“Ed, it’s for you.” Wayne shouted.
He practically leapt from the couch, a little bounce in his step as his heart began to soar. Could it be?
It came crashing down the moment he saw Steve standing there instead as he halted his movement, smile fading away.
“Harrington, what are you doing here?” he grumbled out, as Wayne excused himself, as Eddie moved himself in front of the other man.
“Look, I just came here to talk. Man to man.”
“Yeah. Sure. So, talk then.” He spat.
“First of all, Peach isn’t here. Cut that bravado bullshit you’ve got going on in front of her. It’s just me here.”
Eddie rolled his eyes.
“And I know I’ve never been your favorite person.”
“That’s an understatement.” the metalhead mumbled.
Steve sent him a sideways glance; he didn't want to be here anymore than Eddie wanted to see him.
“Look, I think we both want the same thing here.” Steve watched him arch a brow at his words as he continued. “We truly just want what's best for her. Don’t we?”
Eddie nodded.
‘Of course, man. I know I have a lot to make up for but I’m here to do that.”
“Munson, if you leave this time there isn’t any coming back. She’s done. You get that right? You and I both know that she deserves better.”
“I know, big boy,” he grinned at him. “I’ve already made my choice; the rest is up to her.”
Steve nodded this time and turned to head back down the steps.
“Hey Steve,” he called out after him. “I owe you an apology.”
Steve eyed him suspiciously at first. They’d both been hot heads, it wasn’t really all on Eddie.
“I didn’t… Peach told me… well your kid, it’s just yours.” He was getting tongue tied thinking about it. “I’m sorry for what I said. I had no right in assuming anything. And you’re right, I haven’t been around. I don’t know jack shit about anyone here anymore.”
“It’s cool man. It’s… you didn’t know.” He wanted to say more but left it alone. “Thanks.”
“And Steve? Whatever happens I know you’ll be there for her man. She’s in good hands.”
You spent the better part of the morning and mid-afternoon at the Hideout. It was easier to work instead of confronting the multitude of feelings swirling within you.
Now that the work was done, you were headed home.
They make it seem all so simple in the movies and romance novels. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. They live happily ever after. Life is never that simple.
Eddie has made a blunderous mistake but in the process, he ripped your heart out. Were you so willing to hand it back over and expect him to proceed with care?
He wasn't there to pick up the broken pieces nor help you put it or yourself back together.
You gave your heart away so long ago; did you ever truly get it back?
Eddie had made it evident he was sticking around in Hawkins for at least a few more days.
Deep down, you didn’t need a few days. You knew the answer, you just needed to let him know once and for all.
Summary: It’s been 7 years since the love of your life left you behind for his career. When he decides to come back, is it too late to start anew? Will you decide to start over or realize what's been right in front of you this whole time?

You had been trying to read a new book all evening, but your mind kept drifting. Worried about Eddie, even when you knew better.
It was around 10 when your phone started to ring, knocking you from your thoughts. You got up from the couch and shuffled to the kitchen where it hung.
Your fingers hesitantly drew it from its cradle on the wall, “Hello?”
“Hey. It’s Jim. Hope I didn’t wake you.” The gruff voice of the older man, sounding a little tired, maybe annoyed.
“Oh, hey Hop. What are you doing up this late? Everything okay?”
He sighed before beginning, as you instinctively held your breath.
“Listen, it’s… uh… Well, it’s Eddie.”
“What’s wrong? Is he ok?” feeling a sense of dread wash over you.
“He’s fine, he’s just drunk.”
You groaned, pinching the bridge of your nose between your finger and thumb, closing your eyes. You should have known. Seeing him earlier in the parking lot was sounding the alarm bells that you had ignored.
“Hop, you couldn’t have called literally anyone else?”
“Kid, he’s a mess. And he keeps asking for you. Won’t take no for an answer. Won’t shut up about it.” Now regretful that he bothered you, but he continued, “I didn’t want to call Wayne; I think he’d be too much for him to handle tonight. I’d hate for him to see him like this.”
“Randy kicked him out of the Hideout? Never mind, don’t answer that. You guys still there?” already spying the keys on the counter, ready for a hasty exit.
“Yeah, I’ve got him in the back of the cruiser.”
“I’ll be there in 20,” you hung up. Throwing on some sweats and a hoodie, slipping on some old sneakers as you headed out the door.
Wondering the entire ride over what the hell you were even doing. You should let him spend the night at the station, sleeping his hangover off there and call Wayne in the morning.
But you thought of Wayne. Agreeing with Hop on one thing, you would hate for him to see Eddie in such a state. He’d never been immune to his antics but that was years ago. Being thirty now, you’d think he would know how to conduct himself better, given his profession and scrutiny in the public eye.
You pulled up to the Hideout in record time. Your headlights hit the old Blazer, illuminating Hopper who was standing outside leaning against the old, battered ride, raising a brow as you pulled in beside him.
“Speeding, were we?” Hopper admonished with a sarcastic lilt to his voice, as you got out of the car.
“Not sure what you mean Hop.” Meeting the older man halfway, embracing him in a warm hug.
“Good to see you Kid. Wish it were better circumstances.” You parted as he started toward the back door of the cruiser.
“Think you can handle him like this?” opening the door and pulling Eddie up by the arm.
He grunted and opened his half-lidded eyes as far as they would go. Hair disheveled, bangs sticking up from where he had laid down in the seat while waiting for you to arrive.
“Alright Ed, your ride is here.” He helped him from the car, threatening to teeter forward, you wasted no time reaching out to help steady him, placing a hand to his chest.
He wavered toward your space, and you put yourself under his other arm not being held by Hopper, encircling his waist ensuring you had him held tight. He looked over toward you then, and smiled that big, dimpled grin you used to love.
“Hey Pe…*hiccup* Peach,” he uttered, whiskey and cigarette laced breath wafting toward you.
“Well, at least you’re coherent enough to know who I am.” You huffed and led him toward the waiting vehicle. Hop let go so he could open your door for him to get into the back.
Once he was settled, laid out in the seat, you said your goodbyes to the older man.
“And you sure you’re ok to handle him?” asking one last time, giving you a chance for an out as if you would change your mind at this point.
I’ve dealt with worse.” Nodding toward the Hideout. He knew exactly what you meant.
“Alright kid, if you need anything just let me know.” He patted the roof of the car and took his leave.
Eddie started groaning as soon as you pulled out onto the road, you assumed from the immediate jostling. You knew all too well what that sickly sound usually meant.
“Edward James Munson, I swear to God, I will kill you if you throw up in this car!” you yelled, checking him in the rearview, half obscured from his leaned over position.
His eyes snapped open at that and sat up wavering with the car movement. “Hey Peaaachhh,” he slurred. “I won’t throw up, ok? Scouts honor.” Raising his fingers.
You can’t help but roll your eyes at that. “Yeah, ok Eddie. You we’re never in the Scouts.”
He became quiet again as you made your way back home, not a long drive but seemed longer than usual with his presence. Once you pull into your drive; you turn around expecting him to be passed out but he’s already staring straight at you with an incredulous look.
“What?” you whispered, low enough you thought he didn’t hear in his inebriated state.
“Nothin’ Peach, I just missed ya’,” he smiled again, goofy and warm. Eyes trying to stay focused on yours.
“And you’re drunk” you quipped. “Let’s get you in the house to get a little rest. You’re going to feel like shit in the morning.” Turning then to remove yourself from his space, suddenly feeling too warm, to close to him.
You took a deep breath. Telling yourself you could do this. Just let him sleep it off. It’s no big deal.
You opened the back door thankful he wasn’t close enough to tumble out. He let you help him up and out. He leaned into you and rested his arm atop your shoulders, you wrap your arm around his waist once more as you made your way slowly up to the house, weaving side to side, holding him up the best you could. That scent of cigarettes and leather invading your senses. Trying to push the feelings deep down that the familiar once comforting scent brought you.
He leaned over closer to you, while you tried desperately to get the door unlocked.
“Where’s Stevie boy?” he spoke so close lips ghosting over the shell of your ear, breath fanning your cheek sending a shiver through you.
“He doesn’t live here Eddie.” Answering as you finally pushed opened the door contemplating whether he could make it up the stairs.
Eddie thought about your answer for a moment, quizzical look on his face, tilting his head, smile faltering for a moment. You didn’t have time to decipher it, the matter at hand was trying to get him to the couch in one piece.
He was only getting heavier by the second, feet almost dragging instead of taking full steps. You were weaving your way slowly down the hall, when he suddenly lost his balance, your hold on him wavered but he gripped your arm pulling you along with him toward the wall. His back hit with a thud, earning yet another groan.
Your free hand landed on his chest, effectively catching yourself before your body could completely land on his but leaving little space between the two of you, now facing chest to chest.
“Eddie, come on, it’s only a few more feet.” Patting his chest as he looked toward you, your voice drawing him in.
His doe eyes big and shining. You could almost see the Eddie from years ago looking back at you.
He was warm under your palm. Heart steadily beating there. His eyes flitted to your lips before looking back up, his eyes searching yours for an answer or confirmation. You gave no inclination of resistance.
He tentatively rested his other hand on your hip, fingers gripping slightly as he drew your body closer to his. You didn’t stop him, letting him pull you further into his warmth. Your hand that still rested on his chest began to smooth down the length of his torso letting it come to rest on his side.
He started to bring his face closer to yours, noses almost brushing, eyes falling shut as he was aiming to close the distance.
Your own heart beating rapidly, breath caught in your throat. Standing there for a few more seconds, cheeks heating from the sudden closeness. Closing your own eyes as they began to brim with unshed tears, as if finally came to your senses.
You turned your face from him. His lips brushed your cheek, and he pulled back quickly knowing he missed his mark. Quickly withdrawing his hand and letting his head fall back, as it too made a small thud against the wall.
You tried to ignore the buzz that his lips left in their wake and the lingering warmth where his hand had rested on your hip.
“Come on Eddie,” you broke the uncomfortable silence and helped him straighten back up as he righted himself using the wall as leverage.
Making it over to the couch he practically fell onto the cushions. You could tell his body had started to give up the fight of trying to stay awake with all the alcohol lingering in his system. His body started to tilt sideways, his eyelids starting to droop once more.
“Eddie,” you tried gaining his attention, lightly smacking his cheek, “at least take your shoes off. I don’t want your dirty ass boots making a mess of my couch.” He grunted, but relented and did as he was told, untying them one at a time, letting them hit the floor.
You helped him remove his jacket, struggling to fling it from his shoulders on his own, thrashing. Your face closer to his, but his head was still facing down. The leather finally slid from his arms as he let you take it without protest.
“M’sorry Peach.” He whispered so low you barely heard it. Deciding to ignore him, taking the jacket, and turning instead to go find him a blanket, he halts your movements by lightly grabbing your wrist. Searing warmth in contrast to the cool rings on his fingers.
“M’sorry for everything. I… I didn’t mean for it to happen like that. I never meant to hurt you. I… I know I fucked it all up.” He released you from his gentle grip. His gaze lingered on yours for a moment longer before he finally laid down.
He probably wouldn’t remember a thing in the morning. It would be better that way. You made your way upstairs to the linen closet, grabbing a spare pillow and blanket.
As expected, he had completely passed out by the time you made it back. You laid the pillow beside his head and covered him.
He was lying on his side, face pressed into the couch. His curls were a mess, fanned out against the cushion.
“Oh Eddie,” you whispered, turning to take leave, glancing one last time before heading to your own bed.
So many emotions swam within you. He had tried to kiss you, and you barely turned away. All coherent thoughts in that moment had eluded you. All you were thinking was how much you had missed his touch, his kiss. His everything.
You tossed and turned most of the night.
Waking the next morning, already dreading the journey down the stairs, half expecting him to be gone. He was exactly where you had left him.
Blanket a mess, his waist still covered, but his arms were raised above his head. Feet were kicked out, one sock now missing. Which came as no surprise, he had always been a fussy sleeper.
At some point in the night, he had made use of the pillow. You stared for a few more minutes listening to his deep breaths. Eyes lingering over his sleep mused hair, tangled no doubt. But he looked peaceful, face half hidden behind the locks. You started to brush the hair from his face, but quickly put your hand back down. Another slip up, muscle memory without a thought.
You started the coffee pot, knowing Steve and Maddie would be there soon. You weren’t sure how you were going to explain why Eddie was on your couch, knowing how it looked. You sure as hell weren’t going to mention the almost kiss.
You wouldn’t have long to think about it as you heard the car door. Looking up through the window as he was retrieving Maddie from the back.
“Crap,” you hissed, abruptly putting your mug down, barely missing the warm liquid that sloshed from the side.
You made your way to the front door, meeting them before he pushed it open. He never had to knock, always an open invitation.
“Hey!” you spoke, cutting him off. Blocking the entrance slightly.
“Hi. What’re you…” furrowing his brows as his eyes drifted behind you, spotting the metalhead still passed out on the couch. Something flashed in his eyes you couldn’t quite discern.
“Steve, before you say anything, it’s definitely not what you’re thinking, ok.” You opened the door, bidding them both in. Closing it and following behind as they made their way into the kitchen.
Maddie was still half asleep in his arms. Head on his shoulder. She yawned and opened her eyes slowly taking in her surroundings. Mumbling something then, rubbing her eyes with the back of her small hands. When she spotted you, she reached for you without a second thought, taking her from Steve, as you searched his eyes. He remained uncharacteristically quiet.
She laid her head on your shoulder, pressing further into your neck until she seemingly found a comfortable spot.
“Steve, it’s…” you started.
“It looks like Eddie slept over last night. Yeah?” He said brusquely, a tone he never used with you.
“Yeah,” your voice sounded meek, looking to the floor. “He got drunk at the Hideout. Hop called me. He didn’t have anywhere else to go.”
“Right,” he scoffed, turning to put Maddie’s things on the table. Choosing to ignore the sour mood he was in; you aimed your attention toward her instead.
“Hey Baby,” you cooed, rubbing soothing circles to her back. “You want me to make you breakfast?”
“Nuh. Uh,” shaking her head, nuzzling ever closer to you, curls tickling your cheek with each sway of her head.
“Someone sounds grumpy this morning,” Looking back up at Steve, whispering mostly to yourself, “you don’t seem to be the only one.”
His eyes were already on you, seemingly scrutinizing you. Swinging Maddie, a little back and forth, before she lifted her head squirming a bit to be let down. As soon as her feet hit the floor, she scurried off toward the cabinet where you kept the cereal and breakfast bars just for her.
Once she was no longer in direct ear shot, you turned back toward Steve as he spoke up first, pushing himself off the counter he was leaning against to get closer to you.
“Listen, Peach, I’m not sure what this was but, really? You let him stay here after everything you went through?” raising his voice an octave, sounding exasperated. Shaking his head in disbelief, hands on his hips, turning his face toward the ceiling and exhaling a deep breath.
“Steve, I..”
“No, it’s fine.” Cutting you off. “It’s your life and none of my business, right? You can do whatever you want to. Just, uh, don’t let him corrupt my daughter while I’m gone. Okay? You could’ve called me, I would’ve taken her to Rob’s.”
“Don’t do that to me. Don’t act like that.” You stated more forcefully.
Steve rarely showed any anger toward you. He was trying to hold himself back, whether for your sake or Maddie’s, you couldn’t tell.
He looked down at his watch instead of directly addressing you.
“I’ve got to go. I’m running late.” Sighing, letting his arm rest by his side once more as he turned to leave. You knew it was a lie. It was an excuse to get out of your house, away from you.
“Steve, wait.” You caught his arm, tugging him slightly backward. Getting the point, he stopped and turned back around.
“Cut the bullshit and talk to me, I know you aren’t running late. You are the most insufferably punctual human being I have ever known.” Crossing your own arms over your chest now.
He huffed, rolling his eyes at you.
“I’m just disappointed you’d so willingly let him sleep a hangover off here. You owe him nothing. Nothing Y/N!” Shaking his hands toward the living room for emphasis.
“You don’t think I know that, Steven?” Only calling him by his full name when you were annoyed or trying to get under his skin, as he had just spoken yours.
He took a step back, hands back on his hips once more. Nodding his head, as his tongue darted out to lick his lips, biting his lower lip a moment getting ready to lay into you.
You looked around the kitchen then, realizing Maddie wasn’t where you had left her. Cabinet open but abandoned. At some point during the bickering, she snuck away.
You heard muffled voices coming from the living room then. Without another word, you brushed past Steve, bumping his shoulder slightly.
“Real mature” you heard him mutter. You wanted to turn around and argue some more but instead shook your head, ignoring his quip.
Passing the threshold that separated the kitchen from the living room, you spotted Maddie next to Eddie, furrowing her small brows seemingly examining him. Her eyes alight once she spotted you.
“Maddie, baby, there you are.” Eddie’s eyes darted to you, then to Steve hot on your heels.
“Peach! Daddy!” she excitedly squealed, hopping from her perch to join you, taking her hand in yours.
You ignored the confused look Eddie gave the both of you, eyes darting between you and Maddie before you exited the room leaving him to wonder why the hell your daughter had just called you Peach.
