Windrush Exhibition Delayed
This year sees the 72nd anniversary of the SS Empire Windrush bringing in the first organised group of West Indian workers to the UK. They were invited here to reduce the staffing shortage at London Transport and entered England via Tilbury Bridge.
The bridge is intact, but was no longer in use, so artist Everton Wright, known as EVEWRIGHT has used it for an exhibition. It is called The Tilbury Bridge Walkway of Memories and it has images installed on over 500 panes of glass representing the lives of Windrush pioneers and descendants. The photograph above shows EVEWRIGHT at the exhibition site at Tilbury Cruise Terminal, Essex. Unfortunately coronavirus restrictions have delayed the physical opening indefinitely. It is, however, hoped that it will have an online presence soon. There’s more about the delay on https://thurrock.nub.news/n/tilbury39s-new-art-installation-is-delayed-by-covid39s-rule-of-six
