Every Knee, Every Tongue

Wherefore also God highly exalted him, and gave unto him the name which is above every name; that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things on earth and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11 ASV)

The wherefore is important. We need to look back to see why God gave Jesus the name above all names. The answer is not difficult. Jesus left the comforts of heaven, took on the form of a servant, born in very humble circumstances to a very humble family. But that is not the apex of his mission. The apex was to die, knowing beforehand the type of death and the method beforehand. We do not see the reason for his death in this passage, but we know that it was for our sin that he died. But the reason for his death is not in focus in this passage at all. The main thing that is in focus in this passage is the obedience of Christ. In Acts 17:30, we see that a command has gone out from God that because of Jesus death, we are all commanded to repent. Repent of ignoring God's law and being in rebellion to God's law. Instead we have followed our own law and gone our own way. This is what needs to be repented of. As the call has gone out to the entire world, every knee shall bow at the name of Jesus and every tongue shall confess that He is LORD. In declaring that Jesus is LORD, you are agreeing to come into alignment with His law voluntarily. However, there are many people who refuse to acknowledge Jesus' LORDSHIP in this lifetime. It is unclear in this passage why every knee will bow and every tongue shall confess. There are 2 reasons why I think this will happen. Both are possibly involuntary reactions. 1) Jesus' glory and majesty. There can be no other response to His awesomeness. 2) The command will be sent out again, and they will be forced to bow and confess. Both scenarios could be true, but I am not sure of any scripture that would give the reason for either. As it says every knee, I would guess that every living creature ever created that has a knee, will also at this point bow and tongue confess. As animals are not the ones in rebellion, it makes sense that it is most likely the first reason. Either way, this post is a call for people to bow the knee now in this lifetime voluntarily, repent of sin and declare Jesus as LORD. To do so after you have died involuntarily, would not be a good thing. To refuse to live by God's law does not absolve you from the just penalty for rebellion against God. Namely an eternal sentence in God's jail where you never get out. Two Ways to Live? Jesus Christ is LORD. If you like it or not. There is no escaping this truth. The only thing that matters is when will you acknowledge this truth? Now? Or when you see Jesus glory? Or when you are commanded to do so from eternal torment? Father, I pray for all those who are yet alive and who have yet to bow their knee to the LORDSHIP of Jesus and confess Him as King. I pray that we would reach these people with the gospel, or they would graciously hear the gospel being preached again. Allow them another opportunity to respond to the Gospel.
