Japanese Denim

New washes and styles for SS18 from our denim favourites, OrSlow and Chimala. But what’s so special about Japanese selvedge denim?

Noriko Machida, founder of Chimala, has created a brand that is known for their meticulous attention to detail. Woven on pre-war looms, each garment is then hand-finished and hand-distressed by a small artisan team. Her collections are made in small batches and are only available in a handful of stockists worldwide.

OrSlow designer Ichiro Nakasu’s description of his brand’s philosophy sums up what we love about Japanese denim:

“We design clothes "slowly." Here the term "slowly" means: 

· Crafting original clothes carefully. · Creating clothes that are adaptable to different styles of different times. · Presenting the antithesis of a fast-moving modern society and fashion industry and slowing it down.”

“Playing with the nostalgia of beachside summer holidays, the YMC SS18 collection ‘Wish You Were Here’ takes us back to the simpler times. For this season’s lookbook, we look to iconic photographers Martin Parr and Roger Minnick for cues from their documentation of seaside holidays.
