Duelling Scientists, forbidden romance and the hunt for dinosaur bones ... How can you not have read this great book yet?
Spoiler Free Review of Every Hidden Thing By Kenneth Oppel Cover Love: 3/5 I love the covers that give you the moment, where the whole picture makes sense, where every piece of the cover has something to do with the story as a whole. The pretty sunset across the badlands skyline, the deep crevice, the skeleton at the bottom it's all hints of things to come. World Creation: 4/5 The first line on the back of the book is the perfect description of the adventure that awaits you inside. "Romeo and Juliet meets Indiana Jones in this epic tale that combines the hunt for a dinosaur skeleton, bitter rivalries and a forbidden romance." Let's touch on the Romeo and Juliet aspect first. Sam and Rachel are adorable as they fumble their way through falling in love for the first time, while struggling to keep the bitter rivals, their fathers apart. One of the greatest things I found about this romance was that it wasn't rushed, while I'm sure "love at first sight" can exist for some, I like the reality of the struggle. Learning to trust, and to never falter in that trust is and can be a journey. Kenneth Oppel made the journey a part of the adventure in this book as a whole. On to Indiana Jones, now I was totally that kid who did every project possible on dinosaurs, so I enjoyed the fact that they were such a big part of the story. I became totally immersed in the palaeontology aspect of this adventure. I loved reading about the expeditions, the searching through endless rock and plants, the digging, even the way they're named. By the end I felt smarter about both dinosaurs and first love. In the front runner list of favourites for this book was the bitter rivalry between the two fathers, the lengths they go to for the chance to outdo each other made me lol'd multiple times. Author Style: 3/5 I only really had one struggle while reading this book, it was the way that the POV's were switched between characters. When you first start reading, the difference in font, aka POV change, is really obvious and you can prepare yourself as you're reading along. Now I don't know if my eyes just got used to the change or what happened, but it became less obvious and more difficult to follow as the chapters went by. This is the first book I've ever read of Kenneth's and though I had that small difficulty of following along, I would not hesitate to read another. The story had great flow, I laughed a lot, I empathized with the characters and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I want to say another big thank you to @hccfrenzy at Harper Collins for the chance to read and review this for you guys before the Sept 20th release date. I hope you guys give this book a chance and enjoying running around with Sam and Rachel in the hunt for the dinosaurs. Read on people 😁 Read it, Love it, Thank me later.
I shouldn't have told her I loved her. That was too much. Should've kept my mouth shut. Maybe I'd wrecked things, and she thought I was foolish now. Maybe I'd scared her away. I craved those three words more than anything.
