GAM leadership and the Indonesian cabinet have jointly declared ceasefire throughout Aceh, for the span of 30 days. A demilitarised zone has been set up between Aceh and North Sumatra, barring all movements between the provinces. North Sumatran soldiers packed the DMZ with land mines and constant patrols from the southern side.

Indonesian troops are no longer allowed to conduct offensive operations within Aceh. The TNA have also reported that they will 'store away their weapons' for the time being. TNI Patrols in Aceh have been halted entirely.

The peace efforts have received praise from the international community, but the DMZ has been received with mixed sentiments.

The Regent of South Aceh has instructed all available police officials to escort refugees out of the region, but unaware of the setting up of the DMZ by North Sumatran troops, elderly and children instructed to make the trip to the region have faced disaster on their way.
