I enjoy Merry Shannon's books, but they're all genre -- either fantasy or historical. There's also Poppy Jenkins by Clare Ashton, which is very fluffy.

The art in the Dynamite ones hasn't been too awful so far but gah that early run stuff. I think the guy who did the blow up doll esque Army of Darkness comic art was the same one doing Xena for that run

Oh yeah I think the current run’s art is pretty decent! I’ve just had to argue that point a few times lmao. It’s the writing there that’s bugging me. But even that...is better than some of what I’m rereading right now...
