The Mad Scientist
I can’t believe this! For the last 35 years I, Bernard Harrison the 27th, have been slaving away at EarthCorps363 as their lead scientist and now they have the nerve to fire me for being “unethical” or some nonsense! I have toiled and sweat for their demands and now they leave me to rot!
I was so close… So close to creating life! What man can say they have done such a thing? No one! But I will show them!
One week later
Finally I have perfected the formula!
An evil cackle leaves my lips as I stare at the beaker of foaming neon orange. I hold it over the tar like substance I have spread out across the ground in a pit I have created in my basement.
If I can’t use a government paid facility to realize my dream, I will just do it from home where no one can stop me!
Simultaneous BOOM and a flash of light cause my house to quake.
HA!
Perfect timing!
The lightning current will pass through the sodium and electrify my special life-giving ingredient, creating a binding agent to the black matter… And voila!
A new life form!
Slowly I tip the frothing concoction over the pit.
The black matter bubbles and sizzles as the potion mixes.
My heart speeds up!
I have waited for so long!
Crack!
Bang!
Sizzle!
Then everything is silent.
I’m too scared to breathe!
Did I fail?
Was it all a waste?
Suddenly the black mud breathed.
A boisterous laugh escapes my chest!
I have done it.
Suddenly little bubbles push up through the black tar. Little by little, they slowly creep out of the mud.
They look somewhat like black fluffy spiders, only their appendages come out at all angles. None of them are symmetrical and have large pincers in place of mouths.
To be quite frank, they look like something out of a nightmare, but I don’t care! They are perfect!
I grab my controller and aim it at my minions and push the big red button. It zaps them with blue electricity and my creatures come to attention!
I laugh again.
“It’s working! It’s WORKING!” I shout with maniacal joy.
“My minions!” I address my tiny workers, “I have been unfairly judged and unjustly shunned! Tonight we will storm EarthCorps’ laboratory and destroy everything they hold dear!”
There is a low buzzing coming from my little creations.
Huh, I didn’t know they could do that!
But never mind! I must focus on my main goal, which of course is revenge!
I type a series of numbers into my controller to give my minions the location of the building and push the green button again.
They start moving, forming a dark cloud around me as I march to our destination.
I push through my door and I’m slammed with the driving rain, but I can hardly spend a moment to care! I have a purpose to fulfill.
The rumbling of the tiny feet splash through the mud marches in time with my heartbeat.
Suddenly the sky opens up and the thunder cracks directly above me and lighting called from the sky electrocutes my remote.
I look at the remote.
A frown forms on my face.
It’s dead.
I shake it with both hands.
“What is wrong with you?” I grumble.
“You can’t do this to me!” I shout at the inanimate and un-operational object, while shaking it for all that it’s worth.
While all my focus is on the dead controller in my shaking hands, I have failed to pay attention to what happened to my minions.
Thunder continues to crash above my head, but a sudden hissing noise brings me back to my surroundings.
Neon orange eyes flash my way.
Huh, I was unaware they had eyes, I think to myself, as I quirk my eyebrow, and try to study them for the first time.
Suddenly they converge on me, crawling up my legs, scratching, biting and hissing at me.
I scream as they slowly make their way up my pants
“NOOOO!” I scream.
Finally a dark furry monster makes its way up to my nose staring straight into my eyes.
And I swear, it these things could have the ability to smirk, this one did!
“What are you doing? I made you! You are my creations! You can’t turn against me!” I try to reason with it.
It sits still for a moment.
I hope I have gotten through to it.
Then it attacks my eyes, blinding me.
The last thing I know is the hissing noise and rumbling of thunder above me as my body writhes in pain and I slowly fade into the darkness.
