Cuckoo (2024)
tbth i think my favourite part of smile 2 is how utterly fucking sad joel looked in the opening. i mean kyle gallner's performance was definitely part of it like he's a legit fantastic actor but a good chunk was just how fucking crestfallen this lad was. you don't even need context for the first film. like. look at him.
absolute wet cat of a man
Just rewatched Skinamarink and I need to yap about it.
So, like, still the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. Scared the shit out of me.
I got a lot more out of it this time, plot/theme wise. I got a sense of “house is not a home” from it. Like, it felt like it was about growing up in a household that’s not so much abusive as it is distant. It felt cold. Un-lived-in. Liminal. Like a reconstruction of a residence. The only place that ever felt lived in was the living room, where Kevin and Kaylee slept and had their Legos. A house that’s not a home, not because it’s malicious, but because it simply lacks warmth.
The entity, though - very much malicious. It sort of had two separate, almost conflicting vibes, though.
Like, sometimes it felt like it was distantly malevolent. There were times where it felt like this ever-present malice. It took away the doors and windows and the toilet, but it never actually did anything to the kids directly, not when it was acting like this.
Other times, it felt like a kid. It stole Kevin and Kaylee’s toys. It wanted to play with them, then hurt them. It was more intimately cruel (if that’s even the right term?). It acted like a cruel child.
The only thing sort of consistent about it was that it kind of was the dark the constant shadows were the entity. It couldn’t do anything to the kids directly, until it beckoned them upstairs or into the basement - where there wasn’t any (or as much) light.
Just, man, I love this movie. It taps into that primal part of your brain. It takes advantage of instinctive pattern recognition and makes you see things. It makes you feel childhood fear. It makes you feel actually scared. Not startled or disturbed or what have you - scared.
Watching it was kind of like an attention span reset. It was a kind of detox. I checked my phone maybe twice, only to see what notifications were. Aside from that? My eyes were glued to the screen.
I was close to tears. From eye strain or terror, I don’t know.
Please watch this movie. Watch it in the dark, alone, with no distractions. Give this film your entire attention. Even if you’ve already seen it and didn’t care for it, give it another shot. Let it consume you for that 100 minutes.
