Everything I’m Going to Watch in August: Too Hot To Think Of Something Clever
Hellooo, is everyone having a good summer? Everyone hiding from the unyielding blaze of the sun in their cozy homes binging television? Protect your skin from the sun's blue light, and instead blast it directly into your face via your laptop and television. Truly, I cannot believe it's August already. Instead of going on a summer vacation I instead bought a palette of red tone eyeshadows in an attempt to cultivate a My Chemical Romance inspired summer goth look. I'll let you know how that works out for me, but I'm feeling optimistic.
Speaking of optimism I AM happy to report that I actually took my own advice (for once) and was able to get through some television backlog during the July tv drought. Finished season 2 of GLOW which I found to be highly enjoyable and even better than season 1 (with some truly inspiring lewks). I also finally started in on Pose, which I had avoided for fear it would be depressing and morose. This was my b because Pose is actually full of life and joy and fun and the best of 80's music (with some truly inspiring lewks). Sorry I doubted you Ryan Mur- just kidding, I will NEVER apologize to Ryan Murphy.
As for July's actual premieres-
Sharp Objects - Feels like if The Virgin Suicides was written by Flannery O'Conner, and I am here for it. Beautiful and unsettling, this show gives me my fav feels of "poignant" and "life is empty". I am well and fine.
Castle Rock - I've never read a Stephen King novel so I'm probably missing out on a lot of great easter eggs, but the promised mystery of this show plus the cast (Andre Holland forever!) have me intrigued for now. I don't love how everyone acts like they are in a horror movie (like WHY would you go down a MYSTERY HOLE in a CLEARLY HAUNTED PRISON), but maybe that's how they act in the books too? I'll reserve judgement (lol as if).
Making It - This is on literally right now, but I am writing this so we can't have everything.
A lot of shows premiere this month that I know people Watch and Like, such as The Sinner, Animals, Better Call Saul, Insecure, Fear the Walking Dead etc. but I'm not tangling with any of em. Look, at least I REMINDED you those shows were coming back, so go set your DVR and then come back to learn about all the weird British shit that I am watching.
Sunday, August 5th - Keeping Up With the Kardashians (9pm on E!)
Ever so sorry to report, that I am in no way sorry about this.
Friday, August 10th - Ordeal by Innocence (Amazon)
Yes friends, it is yet another BBC adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel starring the well-used Matthew Goode (and the immortal Anna Chancellor). Unlike Stephen King, I have read every one of Ms. Christie's novels, and the more of her mystery miniseries they make, the stronger I become.
Friday August 17th - Disenchantment (Netflix)
Futurama is one of my favorite animated shows, and even though Matt Groening hasn't been particularly groe-at as of late (I tried it), I'm still going to at least check out this fantasy offering. The trailer gave me one good out loud laugh, and in 2018 isn't that all one can ask for.
Friday, August 24th - The Innocents (Netflix)
Obviously I try and write pithy original summaries of these shows for you guys, but in this case I am just going to rip the Metacritic description for this one because it describes something perfect. "Guy Pearce stars in this British supernatural teen drama" Mic drop.
Sunday, August 26th - America To Me (9pm on Starz)
I truly feel like almost no one has access to Starz, but maybe it's time to start thinking about stealing your parent's/roommate's parent's cable log in as the channel increasingly seems to have a lot more to offer beyond Outlander. America to Me is a docu-series following black teenagers at Oak Park High outside of Chicago. Beyond the appeal of any documentary series following teenagers (I miss you Made), this one seeks to tackle issues of race, especially relating to education, head on.
Friday, August 31st - Jack Ryan (Amazon)
I’ll be real with you, I’m not like SUPER interested in this show, but I am going to at least watch one episode because I’d really like to see John Krasinski running around, and maybe jumping over some stuff, and hopefully doing at least one push up and/or pull up. I’m a woman, I have needs. Also dying to know what accent Abbie Cornish is supposed to have.
And there we have it! I will see you next month where I will stubbornly not watch any of the new network shows. Also looking for a new show to recap...stay tuned!
