"Design is at the center of another process: that of mediator between consumer and product, between message and audience. It is a position of such profound influence and such limitless potential, that I've never understood why so many designers seem so reluctant to fill it." - Christopher Simmons, Just Design
Possibly my favorite episode of Design Matters. Bravo!
Christopher Simmons is a designer, writer, educator, design advocate and principal of the noted San Francisco design office MINE™. He is the author of four books, the most recent being Just Design: Socially Conscious Design for Critical Causes.
Speedometers are those kind of items you look at thousands of times during your live [sic], without ever really noticing. You notice the speed, not the meter. And if you do notice the meter chances are you don’t realize someone actually designed it. The company probably even did some research beforehand. Research regarding the readability of typefaces, the right size of the numbers and the space between them.
It's another one of those examples that show design is everywhere, even in places we rarely appreciate.
