(it's "discourse" related so I figured I'd throw this over here) I'm going back through my dash and seeing that "vote for best tumblr post of the decade!" thing you reblogged a couple days ago include "this sounds suspiciously aphobic or possibly terfy" when if I remember correctly, OP /was/ aphobic, actually gave me an anxiety attack. A post that gave exclusionists an excuse to turn us hearing their dogwhistles into a meme nominated as something iconically funny. What is wrong with people.

FUCK I forgot that stupid post was on the list. I went through each of the posts one by one to cast my vote, and by the time I did, I had forgotten that shitshow was on the list because it’s not even top ten material, let alone #1.

Yes, the person who was called “suspiciously terfy” was in fact a terf. IIRC--and forgive me, it was so long ago now--the tags on the OP contained a very obvious dogwhistle, and the post itself was originally circulated through TERFs and aphobes first, before breaking out into a larger sphere of popularity.

It’s really a disappointment and a disgusting mess that it became a meme at all, let alone enough of one that it can end up on a finalist list for best meme of the decade.

Today we were running Prae and someone said "instead of fighting Lahabrea/Gaius what if we could seduce them instead?" and it resulted in this hilarious conversation that reminded me of something you said. So when Gaius was on the ground giving his last speech, I said "Gaius if you want us to top you so bad you have to buy us dinner first" and it got me a keyboard smash in chat and a player com, thank you

One time, I pointed out that Gaius is the thirstiest bottom in the entire game, who literally dies* begging you to top not only him but his entire family and his whole country, and every single person in the run booed me and went off about how he’s a top.

Here's another angle I'm not seeing a lot of discussion about - everything the LGBT+ community has built on tumblr. LGBT+ content is very commonly marked as being explicit when it isn't. What if it gets deleted or flagged? What are we going to do in the future if we watch to talk about ex. who coined the word exorsexist, what the main talking points of bihet discourse were, what year the aro flag removed the yellow stripe? I'm terrified.

People tend to use it for everything that isn’t the traditional sex+romance combo, so it can be hard to sort out what it’s originally about. (Other than that it’s not about queering Plato, generally.)

The more I think about it, the more "[animal] categorically hates [marginalized group]" is such an odd thing to seriously argue - and I think some people do mean it seriously because I've watched people get indignant over statements to the contrary, rushing in to argue that yes, either [animal] really does hate [marginalized group] or that a particular animal they own truly hates [marginalized group]. (1)

(2) All I can think is that the people doing this either believe attacking a marginalized group is fun/a game, or that saying these things will upset members of that group who love that animal and they want to hurt people. Why are people like this? :/ (It's usually aimed at a-spec people and "bihets" but I've also seen it aimed at ""transtrenders"" and self-diagnosed people like, ugh.)

It is because they perceive attacking a marginalized group as a fun game.

Like, that’s genuinely it.

These people have been so thoroughly, horribly affected my radfem style rhetoric that they genuinely believe that making a mockery of people who are suffering is a great social bonding activity that they can use to have fun and gain social standing in their group.

And they can’t see anything wrong with that.

It’s... astonishing, honestly.

For my own part in this, I just want to point out that the place I first heard about “all [animals] hate [marginalized group]” was when I was 6-ish, and someone told my aunt that his dog could “smell the gay on her” and that his dog hated gays.

The first time it was directed at me, I was 11 years old. At the end of September 2001, I learned that in addition to being able to smell gayness and hating it, all dogs also hated ragheads like myself.

It was a very popular thing to say, that people were training their dogs to hunt be because dogs know how filthy Middle Easterns like me are.

That’s what I end up defaulting back to, when people say “all cats hate aces” or similar.

It’s the same thing.

And there are people who will swear that it’s not, because this time they’re targetting really, truly, genuinely dangerous people.

But they aren’t.

They really, really are not.
