You don't have to like weed but I find people who are vehemently anti-weed but claim to be left leaning infuriating. If you go into a rage because you smelled someone smoking pot, how the fuck do you expect to form community with people addicted to meth? It's easier to say you hate smokers than to say you hate all drug users in leftist spaces because one makes you sound a bit like a square while the other is the writing on the wall. You aren't anti-weed, you're anti-drug user and anyone who uses substances is not safe around you.

I know dozens of people who use meth, coke, and fentanyl. While heroin is harder to get I do know some folks who use it when they can. Some of these drug users are my neighbors, some are my clients, and some are my friends & family. One does not cease to be human just because they use a substance you find scary.

Community doesn't mean you need to invite them to your home and look away if they smoke there. It means you don't call your property manager because you suspect your neighbor uses. It means you don't require drug tests for homeless shelters and housing services. It means the very idea of someone who smokes meth in your community doesn't make you go, "what the hell."

Genuinely kind of a wild thing to see in the replies as someone who has been professionally practicing harm reduction for years.

Way more people are addicted to opiates, meth, whippets, cocaine, you name it, than you have been lead to believe, and on top of that, they are often the "normal" or "functional" people you see every day, not just the person tweaking out at the gas stations. Judges, bank tellers, grandmas, teachers, the nice lady who runs your bakery— all of them. You are ALREADY IN COMMUNITY WITH THESE PEOPLE. Start fucking acting like it.

It means knowing how to administer narcan should be as common as knowing how to administer an EpiPen or inhaler, and having some on hand as common as knowing where your friend stores their rescue meds. We need to know about other interventions, including withdrawal meds.

"What to do if Someone has Nodded Off" and "What is the Recovery Position, and Who Needs it?" should be in little informational pamphlets just as much as "How to Perform the Heimlich Maneuver"

We need safe sharps disposal as much as we need any other waste disposal. We need safe injection sites as much as we need bars. We need to know what too much looks like, and that only happens when we get rid of this unrealistic notion of Abstinence Only.

My employer and others I know have started banning employees from using narcan on the clock, carrying it in the building, etc. They do this by fearmongering about people being enraged and violent when they wake from the narcan.

This means that the number 1 way people in the US receive first aid training is now saying "this extremely safe, freely available, effective method of saving lives is Bad Actually and if you don't Die from using it, you'll be fired."

Nothing is better than animal whose job it is to basically exist In a specific space. Bodega cat basically just lives there. Bookshop dog whose most taxing duty is waking up from naps to say hello to incoming customers. Librarian horse that basically just goes for walkies with their buddy everyday. Eridian Grace, as in culturally Eridian, not the species Eridian, is so important to me.

Grace who does jazz hands and taps when he's asking a question and says some words three times like Rocky. Grace who makes chirps and trilling noises when he's happy.

Grace who starts thinking and dreaming in Eridian, who sometimes has dreams that are just sound, no visual. (Grace who, if he ever goes back to Earth for whatever reason after years on Erid, forgets some words in English and speaks in the sentence structure of Eridian because he has to translate from Eridian to English when he speaks outloud).

Grace who does scarification (even if Rocky protests at first) - I've read some fics where he does the Voyager pulsar map, or dots and lines showing his route from Sol, to Tau Ceti, turning around towards Sol, and then the line going all the way back to Erid. Even though he already has the scars from Rocky saving him, maybe Rocky's family crest. A scar showing his rank as Captain of the Hail Mary - maybe something to represent her, too.

Grace who wears Eridian gems, as earrings, in a chain for his glasses, in strings draped over him that clink together when he walks - the most important ones, like the earrings he wears all the time, the color of the blueish-green gems (or spots?) in/on Rocky's carapace.

Grace who wears a bracelet on each arm that have ribbed marks like on Rocky's arm so he can properly say goodbye (not something he had to do, but something that felt right to do, something that made him feel more like himself), sound included.

Grace who considers himself an Eridian!! Grace who IS an Eridian!!

you get me… i need eridian grace so bad. i definitely this his body movements and cues would become a lot less aggressive and hed lack some facial expressions, not just from like.. the pressure and stuff hes living in, but also because everyone around him doesnt need those as much more pronounced movements, hell he could twitch a muscle and theyd know.

he speaks quieter, using sound cues a lot that dont particularly make sense to any normal human. most eridians who spend a lot of time with him have developed these sound cues as well, which is definitely strange. since grace cant make all the sounds they can make i like to think he has a sorta like.. sound board? not one he uses a lot but if hes talking to a not well known eridian hell use it to indicate tone and other things like that when necessary, he likes to use it while teaching cuz he doesnt want to have kids growing up and talking weird from the get go (they usually do anyways)

i like also thinking about how rocky is probably so much different than everyone else. he not only spent 4 decades alone with no company, but then spent the next 8(?) or so years with a complete alien with VERY different cultures. he’s probably a lot different now. :3
