It's not really about blackberries
have nothing against blackberries. In fact I rather like blackberries, especially when baked into cobbler form. In order to get ripe blackberries from the vine I am even willing to suffer the infernal bites of hell’s escaped children—chiggers. Blackberries are delicious in their mixture of sweet and tart and juicy. But I digress.
The point here is really not about blackberries at all. It’s about paying attention. It’s about choosing to live my life not being unaware. It’s about seeing God alive and at work in everything and seeing everything alive and at work in God.
As I spend this summer with Crater Lake NP as my backyard, I am challenging myself to notice God not only in the unbelievable blue water of the lake or the magical dance of snow flurries but also in the faces of guests who check into the lodge, in my coworkers and neighbors, in the flit of the chipmunk’s tail as he dashes (once again) in and out of our dorm room, and in the hundreds of other tiny moments of holiness and divine creativity.
So, no picking blackberries, no daubing my face unaware. Thanks, Elizabeth Barrett Browning for the reminder.
