I love it
thanks! gonna keep this tag forever now 👍
@eviljaffafish ummm, the o.j. simpson case was a super big deal in LA bc while the double homicide committed by simpson had nothing to do with race, his lawyers argued that he was framed by the police bc he was black. it was 1994 and the LAPD had a history of injustice towards african americans which had sparked the LA riots in 1992 when a bunch of cops got off with no penalty for beating rodney king to death (or close to death? cant remember), who was pulled over for speeding i believe? again cant remember, ANYWAYS the court’s decision to let the cops off sparked serious rioting in 92 (which was focused in koreatown and had a lot to do with tensions between the koreans and blacks in the neighborhood, though that part usually gets left out of the story).
so then there is o.j. simpson, who was an incredibly charismatic and beloved football player, who turned out to be a sociopath, but he grew up in the projects and as soon as he got out he turned his back on the community, never gave back, moved to super white, rich neighborhood brentwood and mostly hung out with rich white people and was super cool with the LAPD and invited them to pool parties at his mansion and shit (so the idea that they framed him for murder is RIDICULOUS) but anyways he had a terrible temper and beat his wife, nicole brown often which was swept under the carpet bc he was famous and she often called 911 fearing for her life and almost no reports were made. so she left him but he would follow her and threaten her, show up at her house and abuse her and one time she was at home with this waiter ron goldman and o.j. showed up and killed them both, stabbing them like 20 times each WHILE HIS CHILDREN WERE ASLEEP UPSTAIRS and rushed home to pack for a flight for chicago an hour later. when the police showed up later that night and realized it was simpson’s ex-wife, they went immediately to his house to alert him (and were concerned he might be in danger as well) and he wasn’t home but his house guest kato was and mentioned that he felt an earthquake an hour earlier but there was no earthquake so they checked behind the poolhouse and found a glove that matched a glove at the crime scene and a bloody thumbprint on o.j.’s infamous white ford bronco, and blood and hair in the car that belonged to him and both of the victims. BASICALLY there was an OVERWHELMING amount of evidence to prove his guilt, coupled with recorded 911 calls from his wife on numerous occasions to establish his history with domestic violence, it is obvious that he did it. so the fact that he got off is upsetting for that reason alone.
BUT THEN everything about the case was so sensationalized and people were watching it every day on tv and everyone was addicted to it. on the day his lawyers were going to take him to the jail he had a gun and kept threatening to kill himself and escaped with his friend driving an identical white ford bronco which when the police found him turned into a slow-speed car chase as he kept threatening to kill himself if they stopped and that he just wanted to go see his mama. FINALLY they talked him out of the car, but like everything was so fucking melodramatic. and his main lawyer, johnnie cochran made the who trial about how black people in LA are victimized by the LAPD, which is fucked up bc OJ WAS SO DETACHED FROM THE BLACK COMMUNITY LIKE???? this wasn’t a guy who was arrested bc he was black HE COMMITTED TWO INCREDIBLY VIOLENT MURDERS, but the trial was such a circus they were able to get the jury to doubt enough to rationalize getting him off. and his lawyers pulled some dirty, unethical shit. one of the odd things looking back though, is that oj and his wife nicole were good friends with robert and kris kardashian, robert kardashian of course being the father of kim (as well as khole, kourtney, and rob jr) and was a lawyer and on oj’s legal team. he was initially blinded by his friendship with oj and believed he was innocent but realized the truth which was pretty upsetting considering he was close to nicole as well as oj. but like, that was one of the things that added to some of kim’s fame early on, since everyone involved in the oj trial was pretty famous.
AND THEN a few years ago, oj being a complete fucking moron, got arrested for armed robbery and spent 10? years in jail, he just got released on parole bc the robbery was not a big deal (he was trying to steal back his heisman trophy) but the judge took the opportunity to lock him up. but since it wasn’t a serious crime they couldn’t keep him but what a fucking idiot, like he got away with double murder!!!!!!!!!! ughhh. anyways. the documentary o.j. simpson: made in america is worth checking out bc it goes into the LA riots and the LAPD in the 1990s and what happened to oj after the trial. it is super long but you can skip around, if you are curious of course. it is fascinating and horrifying but really touches on a lot of stuff that we are still dealing with in the us.
