“Here, you can have a snuggle with Ollie today.” She said, bringing her favourite and treasured stuffed giraffe to Steve to cheer him up. “He makes all the tears and sads go away.” @evolutionmastery

"Thanks, sweetie," Steve said forcing a smile when the little girl waved the giraffe in front of his face. His emotions were too deep to share with his daughter, she wouldn't even understand if he did. From now on though he would have to do a better job at keeping his sad, melancholy feelings hidden because he sure as hell didn't want to make Ronja worry. She had gone through so much already and finally she was in a stable home and felt safe and secure with him. Worry might make her scared. Steve took the stuffed animal into his hands and then picked her up and set her on his lap. "Look, it's working. Dad is already starting to feel much better," he said quietly before pressing a kiss to the side of her head.

A hailstorm of bullets zinged past them, deflecting off of the giant metal and concrete slabs they were currently hiding behind. This was too much for him to try and protect her from--they were going to get shot if they even so much as peeked over the top without some sort of protection, meaning that making a run for the jet was out of the question. It meant one of them was going to have to do something stupid and sacrificial while the other took advantage of the distraction to make a break for it.

Obviously, Steve was best fit for the stupid part of the plan.

“No, you make a run for it to the jet. I’ll draw their fire. Go!” And without any further argument, he leaped out from behind their cover and began sprinting away as fast as possible, his shield between himself and oncoming fire.

It was a little past 11 pm and Steve was relaxed in on the couch reading a new novel he picked up at the bookstore. He enjoyed this alone time when his daughter was soundly asleep in her room. Or so he thought. He could feel someone creeping up behind the couch (knowing it was Ronja) but he didn't say anything. Next he felt her chin rest against his shoulder and peering over it. "Hey, you," Steve said turning his head slightly. "You're up late. Everything okay, sweetheart?"

“shhh.  daddy’s okay...” he said quietly, trying not to cry more tears as she was wiping them away.  he hated when he had nightmares -- especially ones where he was unable to save his daughter.

steve budged over allowing more room for ronja.  “’course you can stay here, sweetheart.” perhaps it was better for her to be next to him at least he’d know where she was.  “you got enough room? or am i going to end up with your feet in my face again?” he laughed as he tickled her side.

"What happened this time kid?" He sat down next to Ronja, patting her back in sympathy. "Is your brother giving you a hard time? Or is it school again?"

"Happy birthday!" Ronja exclaimed when she saw Steve come out of his bedroom, quickly sliding off the kitchen chair and running to him with a colorful card and a somewhat poorly wrapped gift. The card was entirely hand made by her, something she was very proud of. On the front, there was a picture of Steve in his Captain America outfit and holding the shield. On the inside, there was a picture of them together, in the ZOO, looking at giraffes and zebras. And above, in wonky letters since she was still only learning to write: Heppy Birday Dad!

"Do you wanna open it?" She asked eagerly, putting the gift in his hands and excited to see if he would like it. Sam helped he pick a set of colored pencils for Steve but she had wrapped it herself. @evolutionmastery

Steve cleared the day to celebrate his birthday with his daughter. Usually the Avengers threw him a big party but this year he wanted something a little more quiet. "Thank you, sweetheart!" he said with a smile as he took the card. A small chuckle fell from his lips when he saw the picture she drew and how she spelled some of the words. "I love it. I never had a better birthday card."

She handed him the gift and he took it. "I do want to open it!" he said as he carefully undid the wrapping paper. His eyes lit up when he saw the colored pencils. "This is perfect! I've been wanting to get a set of these." He set the case down on the table and scooped the little girl into his arms and lifted her high into the air. "This is turning out to be the best birthday ever." He kissed her forehead and then set her back down.

“I’m awake because I’m stressed about my presentation for biology tomorrow, what about you?”

"Ain't my bedtime, yet," Bucky drawled, leaning his forearm on the doorjamb and gifting the young woman standing just outside his door with a faint smirk. After a moment, he stood aside to let her enter. He closed the door behind her and flipped the kitchen light on as he passed.

"You need to practice or a distraction?" he asked, leaning on the counter that also served as a kitchen table and room divider in his small studio. What he called a couch was really little more than a wide armchair, the blankets he used as bedding folded neatly and hung over one arm. He supposed he should consider getting an actual bed some day, but hadn't gotten to it, yet.

“Ain’t that the question?” Bucky asked with a sad smile. Settling uncomfortably against the wall, the arms folded across his chest might have served as a shield if the enemy wasn’t in his head.

“I think...seventy-five, eighty years ago...there was a time when I would have said people. My family, friends...I did have a few of those other than Steve once upon a time. But, they’re all gone now and...after decades surrounded by the worst of humanity, I’m not so sure people are all they’re cracked up to be.”

He turned his head to stare out the window. “I guess, if I had to think of something, I’d say that the only time I’ve felt like I could be happy again was when I was down in Louisiana with Sam and his sister. Watching the people in their neighborhood all come together, helping each other, letting me in for a moment to feel like <i>I</i> could help...it reminded me of the old days in the old neighborhood, when I could remember what happiness felt like.”
