It was during my studies of my ‘Art and Design Access Diploma’ that my thoughts of black where challenged. It may sound a bit crazy, but I was taught that, technically, black and white are tones, not colours. It can be explained simply by looking at a colour wheel.
By using red, yellow and blue pigments you can create every colour you wish, yet a pure black is not achieveable. The same is said regarding white, which is the lack of pigment, again, hence why black and white are not colours.

Personally, I use black and white to expand my colours during painting; therefore, creating an extra choice of colours. Saying this, we can see how a deep colour can be subsituted for a tone, such as navy. It creates a rich colour palette for an artwork, walls and soft furnishings. Below is an example of navy features, with a navy sofa and artwork that enhances this trend:

I believe this reduces the stark contrast and offers a smooth velvet finish. I think it is good to note that the colour blue is the most popular by far, with 40% men and 27% women of the population in the UK having this preference.

The following information supports this premise:
“Pinterest recognised Navy as one of the top 100 trends of 2017 with a 80% increase in the use of dark blue across users’ boards. Blue is a soothing, relaxing hue that does not compete for attention, think deep inky blues and dark indigo shades. Dark shades make a striking background for featured artwork.” (Degree Art)
The reason behind the popularity of the colour blue can be simply put: blue skies good weather, blue water is clean and healthy. Blue is good!
